I called majority of ones in Jacksonville and no luck. I went to go look at the tank I posted photo of and the shell in good shape. Problem is its inly 100 gallon. Plus side is I could leave as is and wouldnt have to worry about shortening it but downside is only 52” long and door would only be 36” wide. That is 1” shorter than my OKJ. I was hoping for 54” and by time I use up space for opening I would have 48” of useable grate. Also dont know if this size tank has 3/16” wall thickness

Decisions decisions

New Offset Build_Design Phase

Post by Back9Q » October 9th, 2021, 9:39 am

I am down to two options

Get this 100 gallon tank delivered for $60. I would be able to keeps ends in tact and wouldnt have worry about cutting and resealing (ill have to get used to tank look). Pray that it is atleast 3/16” and live with 44-46” useable grate space

Buy 120 gallon tank for $100. Rent a pickup and drive 2 hours to pickup for another $120ish. Cut end bell off tank then remove middle section and weld endbell back on to get 54-56” I want. Plus side is I know 3/16” thick but hella amount of work to get few extra inches

Your pictures tank looks pretty rough. Lot of deep rust on the outside which is gonna be a pain to clean up, repair and work with.

I went to look at it and used hammer all over tank. Nothing significant where starting to eat thru. I plan on cleaning outside fully with whatever option I go with and keeping raw. I figured a couple hours with grinder at end is what I am looking at no matter what

Anyone ever mount firebox 12-16” into CC when using propane tank? If I go 120 gallon it will be too long for patio. Need keep overall length to 86ish”. I know lose a lot of grate space but still will have significantly more than do now

How much does typical collector stick out from tank?

For 6 inch stack, I add 3 inches so I can weld the back side, so about 9 inches.

It has been done many times but you'll have a really hot spot over the top of the FB. The collector depends on how you design it, some stick out pretty far and others aren't sticking out much more than the diameter of the stack.

This will be top mounted stack that is removable so imagine may stick out 10-12”.

For firebox main reason is to reduce overall length. If I can mount 24” FB 16” into chamber that would help a lot. On a 120 tank what is distance from weld bead to edge of end bell? I dont want FB going in further than this

If this doesnt work then I am cutting end bell off then removing part of tank and welding back on

You would be better off just chopping the tank shorter as opposed to insetting it. The hot spot of insetting is really going to make a lot of the rack space unusable.

There will be a hot spot but dont think will be significant as heat will enter probably 4” above grate level. Main issue I am fighting is trying to get atleast 48” grate space with overall length 90” or less

What is distance between two red lines on a 120 gallon?

It differs depending on the tank. If you have the length from weld to elf and you have the overall length, you can just do the math. I have a 120 gallon compressor tank right now that has 6” bells so that may be a decent estimate.

Found a 3/16” thick 120 about hour away for $125. Luck has it that wifes SUV is just big enough. I am picking up on Thursday and heading on cruise over weekend. I have seen soap and water method used for soak. Would this be good plan to let sit Fri-Mon?

Can I drain before cutting or do I need to cut while filled?

Soap and water will help with the odor of the tank, water is all that you have to have to safely cut the tank. Some guys skip the soap and just burn the inside of the tank after the door is cut out.

Thanks. I was planning to do burn out after cutting off doors. Dont want take chance of heat warping those so ill prob just angle grinder crap out of them and maybe scrub them by hand

I used soap 2x and it still smelled. Didn’t go away till after the burn out.

Is there a good way get smell out of doors without burning them? How likely to warp due to heat?

Also what size bands are used on the doors 1 1/2” x 1/8” or 3/16”?

The straps are not structural so thickness doesn’t matter. I usually use 2” by 1/8”. 1.5” is probably fine.

I burned mine out including the doors:

How bad smell we talking. I see two issues

1. This will be in back of SUV for 2 hours. I can duct tape over openings to help and keep windows down

2. When cutting open and burning how far will smell travel. I have very close neighbors

Wait...did you say you were putting a 120 gal propane tank INSIDE an suv?

Hope you don't get pulled over cause that is way over the legal limit to transport inside a vehicle. Laws like this have a reason behind them. I get 2 of the 30# tanks filled and the guy always asks what I am driving before they are filled cause it has to be open-truck. You seriously might consider renting a trailer and being safe about it.

Plan is inside SUV windows down. I know laws are present for amount of propane that can be transported inside a vehicle by pounds for residential but cant find anything on empty containers

Dont have hitch for trailer

You could rent a pickup truck, or get one of your buddies to let you use his.

What is acceptable FB size that is insulated? If needed to make bigger is it ok to just make taller so you dont use up more horizontal space

Made little progress. Took off front hub/spindle assembly from broken golf cart purchased on marketplace. Also found a 2.5”x6” rectangle with 3/16” side walls I am going to use as the air intake thru bottom of FB

Insulated or non-insulated FBs should be the same size as the measurements you run through the pit calcs. Taller, shorter, wider doesn't matter as long as it is still usable for loading logs, cleaning ash, etc. Given your size constraints on where you are putting your smoker, taller and wider will help you keep it in a smaller footprint.

I think I can get it to 113% with my footprint but that doesnt account for the 1.5"x3"x16" air inlet that will sit inside box

@dacolson I know we have been discussing the throat design and getting heat moving up to the top as quickly as possible. What is your thoughts on making it like the pitmaker vault and making false wall all the way to within 2" of top. Original plan was to have a 2" insulated piece in CC extending roughly 4" above grate level but thought about taking it all the way to the top. This would help when doing whole hogs as it would eliminate a lot of radiate hear at 5" level where head would sit. Just want to make sure it would draft properly doing this. Even if I take it to within 3" of top would still help. Ill do rough sketch today and send over
