I've read about having it extend that far but have no experience. My concern is convection. Would you still get good circulation of heat and smoke if you were that high up in the pit. I would want to hear from someone who has that design. It might be easy to test by just tacking an extension in place. The one thing I would make sure to account for is the volume of the gap you have at the top of the baffle needs to be the greater than or equal to your throat volume, otherwise, you'll mess of the draft.

I am going to start with 4” above grate level. Will add extension for testing. I had a pitmaker vault and I want to say gap at top where smoke enters was 2” or less

Below is rough idea of what I am thinking. Set FB into tank 5”. 2” will be insulation with 3” being open into FB. Weld on 2” insulated piece 4” tall above grate level. Blue highlights is insulation

I think you are on the right path. With the inside wall of the FB insulated, I think that will help with any additional radiant heat from the FB.

May add horizontal shelf off center of FB for water pan. What is good clearance between top of pan and grate

New Offset Build_Design Phase

Post by Back9Q » October 13th, 2021, 8:56 pm

Now that I have design down do I go more modern or rustic/antique

Modern-paint everything. Slam latches on FB with recessed door. Fancy hinges etc

Antique/rustic-maybe some old school iron rivets on door straps. Boiler door on FB. Raw patina with linseed oil. Just wondering if a black frame and wheels would look good matched with this

That's a nice tank, we have two just like it, going to get another this weekend. How does it still have the valves in it? They're illegal to transport that way if I'm not mistaken. The one we're picking up this weekend they had to remove everything and clean it before they'd even let us pay for it.

I've never had to do it but I think Frank has a video on the YouTube channel about it, if I'm not mistaken.

Only valve I could get off was main one and I had to beat it with a hammer. Its also only calve where hose wouldnt fit inside so had to hold it while it filled which sucked

Now for draining it next week. The fence to right is neighbor yard and cant dump there. I would prefer siphon and discharge near back fence as much as possible. Ill go grab some 1/2” clear hose and give it a shot

Get yourself one of these, makes life so much easier. I picked one up for £10 / $12US. No need to risk a mouthful of lovely propane and soap flavoured water :)

Finally back from vacation. Just ordered rear spindle and hubs from amazon. Going to hit up a few trailer manufacturers this week for tube drops so I can start working on the frame.

Looks like I am going to have to remove section of tank. Probably 8” or so. What is best way to make sure endbell matches up when welding back on?

You're probably going to need to make some dogs. Pipefitters weld a nut on the end and push down with a bolt instead of the wedge.

New Offset Build_Design Phase

Post by Back9Q » October 19th, 2021, 3:35 pm

After measuring a bunch of various options from cutting off one or both endbells, removing section of tank, or leave as is we decided to keep everything intact. Roughly 20” will have to hang off patio now so no biggie

Picked up some 2” square today and started on frame. Was pain calculating overall width based on all the hub and steering components but got it to where it would fit through back gate. Once got wheels mounted I noticed a significant problem. There is way too much camber and it looks like a 16yr olds honda civic

Plan is to heat up the brackets with a torch and hammer them down to counter the camber in the spindle. Read spindle and hub arrive tomorrow

What is ID of smokestack for outlaw and Jambo?

Also, in order to get FB to work the depth will end up being 27”. How will this look against a 24” CC. I know a few offsets with high fb/cc opening stick out past CC

If you flip the stub axles, you'd have negative camber instead of positive, be much more stable round corners. ;)

Here is significant issue with FB and wheel placement. Right now wheel interferes with bottom corner of FB. I would have to narrow the frame by a good 6” and shift all way to left just on left side of end bell weld to make fit. Not sure how that would look with it being off centered

Due to spacing I cant widen the frame. Any thoung to make work would be appreciated

You don't have a lot of options with your size restrictions. I would leave the front wheels in the current position and shift the rear wheels forward just enough to clear the FB. You will have to add some weight to the nose to compensate foe the overhang of the FB.

New Offset Build_Design Phase

Post by Back9Q » October 20th, 2021, 7:25 pm

Yeah I am limited. I did a mock up of wheels moved forward and it just looks silly with that large of tank and wheels so narrow. Only way to make it work is to have top of FB few inches above tank centerline. Only way to make that work is with endbells off

Due to this made the decision the end bells are both getting removed and this will be an outlaw clone. Tomorrow plan to shorten the frame to necessary dimensions and add spindle/hub for back wheels. Also will try and bend front spindle level to eliminate camber

For removing end bell how hard what it be to grind down existing welds? Deciding on whether to cut on inside vs outside of weld to possibly give me a few more inches

FB will be 20x20x22 which should give me clearance I need

@dacolson going to need your help with FB/CC opening

Instead of trying to bend the spindles, I might cut off the top ears of the pivot point and reposition a bit closer to center and then resell them on. Lot easier than trying to heat and bend, in my experience as heat always causes other issues.

Those wheels are massive. And rubber. You will need to be careful about the firebox heat as it will prematurely deteriorate them. You might consider looking at lawn mower tires...bet you could find something similar that is a bit smaller and might allow more mounting options. Your front and rear tires don't have to be the same size....
