First Build advice needed

Post by DMbluesmoke » March 30th, 2022, 3:47 pm

Hi All! I have been given an old expansion tank for free, it is 60 gallon and 1/8th inch thick metal. Was wondering if it is worth my time using for a smoker? I do live in Canada and propane tanks are rare to come by, so options are limited. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Cheers!
Daniel

It'll be great for a first time build, probably work just fine, too.

Also in the northern climate and just built a 1/8" 30 gallon out of a 100 lb propane tank! Cold rain or snow or sub-zero temps with winds might benefit with a welding blanket over the cook chamber. The more convective the build the less the steel thickness will matter as the heat is so rapidly replenished, so-to-speak. I bet it'll perform great for you.

Nothing wrong with a 60 gallon tank and 0.125 is fine. My preference is 0.25" but thicker steel adds more work, weight and time and expense to the build so everything has a trade off. My bigger concern would be excessive rust or scale on the inside so get it cut open as soon as you can to make sure you dont have an issue.

Sounds like a great project....keep us posted!

Thank you all for the feed back! Has definitely boosted my confidence in the project so I will definitely push on with the tank. Will keep you all posted when I cut into it

I am in canada, and yes thicker tank are rare. Air compressor at 200 psi (3/16 thick. Not .25 but its good start) is an easy way to go. You can call a guy who repar air compressor, he can rederict you to their customer they just bought new compressor, dont be shy to ask for the older one.

Good build
