Is 20” diameter FB too small for 24” CC?

Post by BiltBBQ » June 30th, 2022, 7:07 pm

I have a 24x72? Propane tank and a 20x48 compressor tank. According to the calculator the FB would need to be like 40” long.

Will this long narrow FB be ok, or should I pony up the $$ for something bigger?

The calculator is based off of volume so it will work but it won't be very practical. I would try to find something else or build a square FB.

Nah, 20" FB for 24" CC can be fine, as long as it's long enough to make up for the volume. See Mill Scale 94; 24x48 + 20x24 IIRC

Who in the world wants a hot firebox sticking out 3 and a half feet? Really makes it impractical to feed and maintain a fire at that depth. Building a square box from plate will allow you to size it properly for better aesthetics, functionality and usability. If you are doing a quality build and plan on using it for many years, I think you will be happy you went to the extra effort.

If this is a budget build, the small tank will work, won't be ideal in any aspect.

It will cost me at least $600 to build a 24” x 24” FB.

I have a 20” air compressor tank that is extremely thick and didn’t cost a dollar.

Would go 20”. You can find used 120gal
Propane tank on marketplace or other sites for $100-200 most of time. I would go this route.
