TQ, I have done them both ways, and liked em both. I was stubborn in my younger days, and when it didn't go right, I said heck with it! Now I have learned how to do it right, and it takes like 30 seconds. I skin em all now! I'm even trying to teach my eight year old assistant the technique.
It might be a sitcom, but can it air before 10 pm?
BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

TQ- I was the same way about comp cooking, but my wife suggested I look into it. So I went to a comp with Smokin Franks, and now I am planning to try it out myself next year! I did notice that this could become a very expensive hobby tho!
I'm sure those here that do comps will welcome you any time. That is what I found unique about comp, very few secrets, its all about good times and good food!

TQ, if you have Netflix, check out the first season of BBQ Pitmasters. It's a reality show but they follow 6 or 7 nationally ranked teams to events across the country. Myron Mixon comes off as an ass but if you get past the bluster and the ball busting there is a lot to learn in season one.

For the longest time I thought very little of myron.
Then when Jamie ( the jambo pit builder ) took grand and he anounced that it was thanks to Myron and his school along with his rub, the look on Myron's face was priceless. It was a real look of gratitude, believe it or not.
Then I watched Johny Trigg square off with a drunk at the am royal. Boy Howdey, I sure thought Johney was gonna light him up.
I didn't think Season 2 was as good. I haven't seen 3 yet, but I thought the change to "Truth or Dare/Beat the Clock" style contests was not as compelling. I mean really, you're going to eliminate someone from a BBQ Contest because they could not make a good Rattlesnake salad over an open pit? Don't get me wrong, I still watched it and listened between the lines as much as I could to pick up tips and tricks, but I thought the first season was more compelling.
I've read several accounts that Myron's persona on the show was greatly exaggerated by him and the producers, and that in real life he's a pretty good guy. I would imagine that he is a good guy with a healthy ego. I don't think a true a$$hat would last long in the BBQ world. (Or perhaps I'm wrong about that ;) )
