Greets from Mississippi

Post by arat » July 13th, 2011, 5:19 pm

Been lurking for awhile... I've been mostly a griller and dabbled around some with a few homemade and cheapo store bought smokers. I've finally decided to take the plunge and try my hand at a UDS. Downloading the DVD now... can't wait ... it's a big 'um :o

Thanks guys! Now if I can just find a suitable drum. It's slim pickins around here. So far everything I've found is either lined or previously filled with some sort of ag chemicals.

I have having the same problem around here. There is one place 2 hours away and another place 4 hours away that has a bunch. With the lined barrels, a couple REAL hot fires and some sanding and its good to go.

Matt is right, with some elbow grease the lined barrels are ok to use. make sure and wear a dust mask

I really have no personal experience with this, but I read a thread where a guy worked and worked trying to clean the liner.

With no luck....

This was with several burns and trying to sand it out.

Then he used regular old comet and a sponge. Said that silly liner came right off with little effort.
It kinda makes me wanna grab a drum and try it.

I just used the Comet trick and it worked great. I did it after after burning the barrel out first. It took all the remaining liner right out.
