Q Bros 500 Gal Squared Off Smoker

Post by onesquin » July 26th, 2012, 6:45 am

My brother and I have been planning a smoker since last Labor Day weekend when we had a Hog Roast. We wanted to have it done by this Labor Day so we are going to give it our best shot. Frank should have our plans to us today and we will start fabrication this weekend.

I picked up a tank a few weeks ago. It is not a standard size 500 gal tank. It is a little shorter with a larger diameter. The diameter is 41.4 in and it is 63 inches seam to seam and 105 in overall. I got it locally from an LP provider and out of respect for those selling tanks in my area(dink) and to Frank I will not publish my source or price and all budget numbers WILL NOT INCLUDE the cost of the tank.

I like to take pictures and will include some of my concept sketches later.

Can this build require more 1/4 in plate!!! Got the tank burned off nicely tonight. Going to order and pickup materials tomorrow. Start cutting and welding Saturday.

I had some tsp left over from another project so I tried to degrease the tank a little. Not sure it was necessary after I decided to do the burn off.

I took the tank to a friends this morning and he cut a rough hole in the tank for me so I could do the burn off tonight.

He is a scrapper and he just gutted a commercial kitchen yesterday. He was getting ready to cut all this stainless up today. I asked him how much and $100 dollars later I had a bunch of stainless!!! Boy was I in the right place at the right time. The flat piece from the exhaust hood will be made into a shelf for the smoker and the other pieces will find their way onto the trailer some day.

The burn off took off almost all 12 layers of paint on this tank. That saved me a lot of work.

The tank supplier already had a 6 inch triangle cut out of the top and you had to sign a waiver of course. It smelled of propane really bad so I was trying to get some of the residue out. That didn't work too well so I decided to do the burn off. I just hope the tank is cooled off by saturday so we can start working on it!!! My goal is to have all the 1/4 plate cut the baffle tacked in. Bonus would be to have the firebox assembled and tacked.

No, the backhoe is my neighbors. The shop is mine. We had two 1000 magnets to lift the sheets of plate and move the tank and firebox around.
