Hello

Post by Joe D » December 5th, 2012, 9:59 pm

Hello everybody. My name is Joe and I'm from Saint Louis Missouri. I've been in love with barbeque since I was a kid. After trying just about every store bought smoker I've decided to build my own. I'm new to welding and have some fabrication experience. I was interested in a propane tank build but in my area the dealers don't really sale tanks at a reasonable price. I found a few on Craigslist but the prices were out of my budget. While looking found a 250 gallon or oil tank in good condition with a trailer for $50 . For the price I couldn't pass up the deal. Scrapping it alone would give me more than my money back. I have 1 question after getting the tank home I noticed these tanks are pretty thin compared to propane tanks. I will be going with the reverse flow design. I wanna know if the baffle plate helps maintain temperature in a cooker the same. Will this type of tank dissipate heat quickly. Do they make good cookers? I'm sure I will have 1,000,000 more questions and look forward to my build and help from experienced people like you. Thanks in advance and any advice would be greatly appreciated

I just got it Frank & I may be making a road trip if this tank doesn't work out. Can anyone give some input on advantage or disadvantages of using a oil tank vs propane tank for a reverse flow? Can anyone tell me if they make a efficient cooker? Thanks

The boil tank ones seem to work out perty ok. I would rather use a thicker tank tho. easier to work with IMHO

Welcome Joe! Glad to have you here.
Remember - the cooker you're about to build will outlive your grand-kids so be careful about cutting corners for a good deal... :D

Hey Joe! Welcome! Yes I have an oil tank smoker and I love it. I am constantly improving on it. It works great now and if you follow the pit calculator yours will too. The thicker metal would certainly be a benefit, but if you're on a budget I see no reason to blow it over the tank. I put a baffle plate in the bottom of mine and have no trouble holding temp.

I have a lot of pics of mine on here, feel free to hit me with questions.

My fabrication skills & equipment aren't the best & alleyrat. I've done sheet metal repairs on my car project & taught my self to get pretty darn good @ spot welds & stitch welding lol. Your smoker looks great. I gave Frank a call & he's only about a 90 minute ride away from me & he invited me out to set me up & rolling in the right direction. This forum is like none other I've been in. You all are willing to help each other out by advice or hands on. I think I'm gonna like it here.
