Well the closed heads are slightly smaller diameter than the open heads which makes them fit a weber 22-1/2" kettle lid better. On the other hand if you want to use a flat lid the open ones work better. On the open head ones you can fit the kettle lid inside the rim of the drum lid and stitch weld it in place then cut the center of it out and use high temp food grade silicone and you will have the best of both worlds.

i think imma stick to making it look just like a regular barrel with the flat lid, but imma get an assortment of closed and open since i talked him down to 5 bucks each if i bought 10 of them!

That's a really good deal! One bit of advice, make sure they are not galvanized! I found one the other day that the lid and the bottom was.

The best way to tell is to weld on it and see if a white wispy powder is left behind. Kinda looks like a spider web. But if you just look at the metal it will be shiny silver. On a barrel it will have a weld seam that will have a blue heat mark where it was welded together. This blue heat mark will not be visible if the barrel is galvanized.

What a find.

Can't wait to see the outcome on if they are galv or not.

I wish you the best of luck that they are not galv and that they are also unlined.

Do a decent burn on them after the tops are off and then a wash down with comet will clean them right up.

Awesome deal.....

The pics aren't to tough once ya do it once or twice.

I use Photobucket for most of mine, its all personal preference.
When I am in a rush for a pic that isn't on my PB then I just upload it to the site.

I have removed several lids from closed head drums and was able to reuse the lid. Its always a good deal when something is free...

hey pitbull, now you need to place a local ad on craigslist that you are buying weber kettles in any condition. I did that and was picking up the lids and the bottoms. i was paying $15 for each kettle. the grates were not really useable but the lid and bottom would be. you would be surprised of the great condition some of them are in. you may hafta fix a hole or two but they work great on a closed head drum.
