Miller 130XP

Post by SOILhunter » January 25th, 2013, 11:34 am

So I'm looking for a welder that will take care of my thin stuff a lot easier, the most it would ever see is occasional 1/4". I mainly need it for 1/8" and smaller as the stick rig can take care of anything else and I really don't have a problem running it. Do you guys think this is too small? Or should I go for a newer model? The price seems right, it's used and they are asking around 300.

I don't know the particulars of that specific model but I have a Miller 135 and it does everything from 1/4 inch down just great and consistently. I've only welded 1/4 inch a couple times - it took 3 passes but that was 5 years ago and it's holding fine. I think I gave about $720 new for it complete in '02 so $300 sounds about right

And on the eighth day God created barbecue …. because he DOES love us and he wants us to be happy. :D

sounds like a good deal to me. You can always use the smaller mig for the 20gauge stuff like drums so might as well get it

Likewise. The 135 is a great Machine with a decent duty cycle. I used mine all week.

I know this thread is old but I came across this same welder for believe it or not the same price :exp: I have a question, would this be a good welder to say weld up a massive 500g RF smoker up on a 16ft trailer ? I was planing to do 1/4 plate on the fire box :ymsmug: or is this just not enough welder for the job? Any advise would be much appreciated.

My hunch is that is wouldn't be large enough.

I would be very concerned about the towing-related welds where the trailer's strength relies on those welds to "stay in your own lane" like the signs always say on the interstate…

I hire those welds done by a certified welder that carries the necessary liability insurance to do so.

My builds aren't that large so if this is the only one you plan on at this size then you have to think about what you will have all those years after this build is complete. Compared to the big units I think the smaller migs are easier to fine tune and haul for general welding repairs etc. - jw2cw

I went and got it, came with a full tank and some spools of steel. I'm going to use it for the general welding like the fire box and mounting the 500g tank, the trailer is a 06 16' tandom trailer seen in my profile pic. I'll be asking more questions in the RF section shortly I'm sure!Image
