250 gallon trailer build by SmokinWelder

Post by smokinwelder » January 28th, 2013, 3:00 pm

Lets try this again, I was having a issue posting pics on my old thread so I decided to start another one. Here is my start with my trailer......Never built one before. The torsion axle got shortened. Trailer is 4x10. Axle is 2500#. 14" wheels. 2500# 2" coupler. Tank has been cleaned and test cut for "booms!" I want to cut the door, or doors soon. I cant decide on one or two doors. I also need some help designing my smoker guys......I want to have a "warming box" but have it as part of the smoke chamber too. Can i get some help please?

Looks like you're making some real progress. Have you sketched out anything for the smoker you want that maybe you could post? I think most of us could be more help if we could see some kind of drawing... :)

Ok, well heres the scoop. I see that a lot of these builds dont go anywhere. Well mine will, and I need all the support I can get. Without responses and advice I have no drive to make this the best smoker, "only smoker" I have ever built.....

wheres the responses.......?

I second what Rick said, hard to offer advice when I'm not sure what you're looking for.

Please take no offence to this, But,

I think I would take a different approach to this area.

Not saying you are not capable in any way, just my opinion.

Image

Maybe one of these instead, I tend to over build. I always have it in my head when I build something. ( What would I do if it fails on the highway. ) I once had an enlightened experience that sure changed my views when I work on something structural. Had both kids with me and the trailer took control, on a bridge at that. Kids cant be replaced.

http://www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Trailer ... upler.aspx

Again, just my opinion,

You have a great trailer design, I like it. But I feel that I see a weak point.

thats awesome.........i like your approach......but my kids will ride with me.......this is a trailer.....in south fl....if you want to advise on the build concept then great....but structually, I will make the calls when it comes to my welds and materials. I need some advice on the build.......but if you think my trailer is weak.............lemme know......Joe

As I said, just my opinion.

But Yes I think the connection at the coupler looks like a point that will receive a fair amount of stress.
You have the length and should have the tongue weight to make it pull like a dream.

As I do not know what you do nor have I ever seen you weld I can not make judgment to if I think it will fail in this situation.

And my comment about kids was not aimed at your kids,,,,,, it was meant towards the poor family that DIES if your trailer comes apart and hits someone head on.

I was trying to be nice in my post and offer my thoughts.

You are 100% correct that its your build. At this point I think my best advise would be to not offer any suggestions other then to visit the plans page and just buy them. There are 1000's of ideas right here in various post for free.

Tom to clarify....what about that coupler point don't you like seeing?

Joe, I ask Tom only because I have seen a lot of guys build great builds but sometimes overlook small things that are big deals x_x ....and I would completely trust Tom's opinion on a trailer build above most of them :-B .....so please don't take offense to what he has said.....he really is saying out of real concern :ympray: .....even though he could be a jerk he isn't trying to be one here... :-bd

lol, the concern is justifiable. I plan on gusseting the coupler section with plate, so no hard feelings either way.........I have a few things on my trailer that are not done.........

Before I pull this baby they will be looked over, but I am more interested in my tank at this point. Please noone feel like they have insulted, or "tried" my "engineering" this is a learning experience.

I think we are all waiting for you to steer us in the direction you want to go. Other than coma's plans, what do YOU want your smoker to look, feel, and run like?
Most members on here take ideas from lots of other builds and either use them as is or spin them a bit to make them unique. I recommend making a list of the ideas you find useful and go from there. :kewl:

Smokinwelder: Looks good to me so far. The axle is way back but I don't know the weight distribution on the trailer. I built a utility trailer to haul my Yamaha Rhino and Zero turn mower and not have to hook up my big trailer. I found a torsion axle like you did and shortened it up too. I made my trailer how I wanted it. I questioned myself about my skills and weather it would work. I got it licensed here in MO and I am very happy with it. I however had mounted the axle too far forward and have to be careful loading it so it doesn't get away from me on the road. It will haul great with my new smoker in it loaded on the front.

What is the chain on the tank for in the photo? Are you worried someone might steal it?
Dave

I need some advice..........I need to sandblast my tank. Its 7' long, and 30" in diameter. I have a air compresser thats rated...scfm 6.6 @ 40 psi, 5.8@ 90 psi with 125 psi max/26 gallon tank. I am going to use a sandblaster here...http://www.auctionflex.com/showlot.ap?c ... 50&lang=En

will this work, or take forever? thanks.

You have a good looking trailer going but.... The hitch area is very questionable. I am not being critical but please redo it. Why did you not just slip it on the tubing instead of making that offset??? If you do away with the offset you will be fine with a straight coupler but as it is it is very week. Just an observation!!!!! Or incorporate a hitch like in the link Tom gave you

I have a sandblaster similar to the one you are interested in. I am a concerned with the 2hp 125psi on the label. This seems very low. I have a 6hp 60gal 125psi compressor that has a hard time keeping up with my blaster. For a blaster to work well you need a compressor that can produce high CFM.
