Baffle plate questions...

Post by Brewery » July 10th, 2012, 8:28 pm

Hey guys I've been debating how to make my baffle plate and would like your thoughts on a few things...

1. I've seen them built with a peice of angle in the center to catch the drippings and funnel down to a drain and then some I've seen are just the flat plate with a hole at one end to plumb in a drain...Is there any pros/cons to either way? I like the idea of the angle iron to funnel the drippings but i'm having problems coming up with a way to make an adjustable baffle with that design...

2. When y'all build an adjustable baffle do you use all-thread for the screw? That's what i'm picturing in my mind but all the all-thread i'm ever able to find is galvanized and I'm thinking that's bad news (heat + galvanized steel)

I know I've seen pictures of some of all the above on here but can't seem to remember where and have had no luck finding them. :help: :jocomp2:

Brewery, I prefer the angle iron drain but flat plate will give you the same result. I do not use baffles in my cookers as I have never seen a need for them. If you want one then at the end where the R/F plate ends and you place your bridge attach the baffle to it.

here ya go Brew, here is how I did mine...
frank's 160 RF build
I did not use all thread. I used what is called "ACME Lead Screw" it is found in most everything with a screw type adjustment such as Vises, trailer Jacks, cnc machines, etc... Mine came off of a large water valve from a hospital. I like using those old valves because they have nice cast iron hand wheels.

Ok thanks guys..

Frank i know what you're talking about, we use short peices at work and call it "ball screw"...I didn't even think about that! :headwall: :kewl:

DC, I've actually already acquired my handles (friends who work on rebuilding valves for the oil/gas industry come in handy at these times)

I guess I've never seen a galvanized piece of all-thread - zinc-plated yes but not galvanized ...
so is zinc-plated dangerous too?
inquiring minds... :-B

Galvanized material is typically hot dipped in zinc... Zinc coated is galvanized so that would be bad stuff in a cooker...

Rick you got me on that one, I wasn't thinking but did mean zinc, which I've seen turn some funny colors when welding so it can't be good I'm thinking
