It would seem that what you lack in photography skills - you more than make up for in fab skills ... that unit is coming together nicely - great job! :D

Usually more beers than smoke.

I could be wrong but I'm thinking those are there to lift the water pan off the baffle plate a little.

New backwoods clone build

Post by KenV » March 23rd, 2013, 8:12 pm

Got a little done today, mainly the cart. The smokers are ready for insulation and wrapping.
TQ, here are a couple pics. The firebox area shows the 1" opening in the side wall where the heat and smoke goes up. Both sides and the back wall have this space.
Image
The pic of the top of the cook chamber shows the the space where the heat and smoke drop in the cook chamber and then exits thru the exhaust holes at the bottom.
Image
Here is a pic of the cart, I swear to god the tabletop is level and square, it must be the angle of th pic.

The rails at the bottom are slides for the waterpan.

New backwoods clone build

Post by KenV » March 23rd, 2013, 10:38 pm

Just picture 3 walls, the outside one is insulation, the second wall is an airspace that carries the heat and smoke up to the top of the cook chamber, the 3rd wall is actually the cook chamber wall. The heat and smoke travel up and then drop into the cook chamber and is pulled to the bottom where the exhaust holes are and then exits at the top where my stack is. Just an insulated reverse flow. The heat and smoke hit the diverter with the rails on it and then has to travel up the side walls and back wall to the top.

Okay so it's a box inside a box.

Outer box is insulated.

Inner box has no ceiling and it's the cook chamber and it's about an inch shorter than the outer box to create a gap between them at the top of the inner box sidewalls.

Heat is applied to the bottom of the outer box and forced to rise AROUND the inner box - over the gap - and back down to get to the stack access holes in the back of the inner box so it can enter the stack plenum to rise up and out the stack.

Overall hot air flow is therefore; UP - DOWN - UP

Is that about right? :-B
