What do you think?

Post by J.R.'s Butt Hutt » May 14th, 2013, 4:21 pm

Here is one more shot at making some comments. I am getting closer to the fabrication phase so don't hold back! Look at these crude drawings and tell me if you think it will work or not.
Here are some basic facts about the tank, firebox and warming cabinet:
Cook Chamber Tank 36"x 96" 400 gal Boiler tank, 1/4' thick wall
Warming Cabinet 36" Tall 66" wide 18" to 24" deep 3/16 checker plate
Firebox 26" diameter 3/8 thick pipe 66" long
Those tuning plates you see are 6" x 1"x 1/4" formed channel that can be clamped together to form a charcoal tray for grilling and/or a baffle, or they can be loosened to be spread apart for tuning plates.

Here are some pics for you more visual folks.

Perty good looking drawing you got there JR. I think it's good how you feed the cook chamber from the trailer side and the firebox from off trailer. THe layout looks very workable. Try drawing it on graph paper using the calculator next. That's where I always find out how it will really look and if I've allowed enough room here and there for the important stuff. If your FB gets to crowding your tires you can move the axle forward and build in a heat shield in the inside of the fender and flip out steps so you enter the trailer directly over the wheel…. fwiw :D

And on the eighth day God created barbecue …. because he DOES love us and he wants us to be happy. :D

Ran the calculator, the firebox is at 113% not taking into account for the flat section of the firebox top.

What do you not like about tuning plates ? I'm planning on making the tuning plates out of formed channel shaped 1/4 inch plates to double as a charcoal tray for grilling. Whats you favorite Ttown BBQ joint?

Tuning plates are awesome but a pain in the ass to make and then "tune".....some guys just don't have the patience for that....and I think I know some body who went to the butt hut in Alabama....the place I'm thinking of is a number one proctologist clinic....

:LG:

I don't see any problem with your idea. As a person using tuning plates, I really like them mine are thicker than your plans but not channel. I would make sure that since it will be tuning plates you have a way figured in for the grease to be diverted from the back side of the CC to the FB. I know it looks like you have it covered on the front but I don't see anything on the back. If grease runs down the back wall and gets to your FB it may catch on fire, inside the CC. It should be able to cook for many people at one time.

Any Ideas on keeping the grease away from the FB?

What I do not like about tuning plates is I like a set it forget it system like reverse flow. Reverse flow in my opinion is so much easier to clean. I will never have a problem with a grease fire. Tuning plates you will need a grease bridge at your firebox end. I do not like the idea of having to screw with something to make it cook. Now Many people love em ain't for me!!!!!!!

Yes, you could take a piece of 1/4" plate 6 inchs wide by the full lenth of your CC with an 1" lip facing down, you could weld this at the top of your FB opening with the lip facing down. If you didn't want it to have a lip, just angle it down a bit to cause the grease to run away from the back wall. This would become sort of a defuser/drip guide, it would guide the grease and also even out your temps across your tuning plates. Seems good to me.

My $0.02
