May be more than you asked for.

Post by Twinpop » June 1st, 2013, 4:32 pm

My name in Don, I go by the name Twinpop because I have 2 sets of twin daughters.
I would like to share some pictures of how I got here sorta.
Building a smoker has been a long time coming. It started with a 14" round el-cheapo briquet grill and drunk chicken.
I decided to do Drunk Turkey. Which required a mod on the 14" el-cheapo. Had an old water heater at hand so cannibalized the exterior sheet metal and made a 12" extention so it would "just" house the turkey.
Now the story gets longer. It also requires some pictures. (pictures were taken around 2001-2002 used digital camera and took pictures of photo's)
I use to Fabricate Slab Granite counter tops and the like.

I fabricated a rack on my E150 Van to haul granite with. At the time in the Seattle area I was the first to do this.

I built most of my own tools. I re-purposed a 7-1/4" SkillSaw as a track slab saw.

I built a floating base for my shaping grinder. Base has water ports through the bottom causing the aluminum base to float on a thin cushion of water.

I got tendonitis really bad 9yrs ago so I quit fabricating. So I am left with 2 rather large tables and no need for them.
As I am also a Brewer. I have decided to build a brew sculpture. (The orange end of the table is the brewing end. The other is going to be the smoker end.)

Enter the smoker. It is smaller compared to what I see some are constructing on here. However this is my first attempt. I have also made every mistake there is so far. Door is cut out no hinges yet. It is a hot water tank so the walls are thin. Got an idea though. I am building a RF smoker. The baffle plate will be mostly 2cm granite. I literately have 2 tons of scrape granite. I figure once it heats up it will hold the heat for several hours. I even have a 3 cm piece to try.

:welcome:

I hope you have as much fun here as I have.
This will be interesting, I've never heard of anyone useing that for a BP. I don't know how it will do with the temp changes or if it has deposits of minerals that could be harmful if cooked into the food. But I'm sure someone knows more about this than me.

Looks great and would look greater if the area yu have welded didnt have the white film around the weld..... the tank is coated of some sort and will not be food worthy due to toxics in the coating. I have a 4 ft round tank I want to do a pizza oven and had thought about granite, seems pretty cool, might be cool if you came away from the firebox a few inches so the intense portion oheat doesnt want to crack the granite. Welcome Twinpop!

OUTSTANDING! Granite will probably be the best BP on this website. I'm pretty sure it's completely inert so no worries on bad chemicals - unless it was "treated" by someone upstream before you got your hands on it… Please keep us posted - you should have a great cooker there.

Any thought of building the whole cooker out of granite as a backyard/patio model that you don't move around?

:D
