Anyone ever build Big Pappas 500 gallon beast?

Post by SmokyJon » June 26th, 2013, 10:33 am

I have a customer that brought me plans that he bought off of the interweb for a 500 gallon smoker called Big Pappas Beast.
I have all of the parts cut out, the fire box, assembled, the warming box assembled and am about ready to mate them together but am having issues deciphering what exactly the holes on top of the fire box and warming box are for.
Has anyone seen or built this smoker?

I am gonna guess those plans came from this site. There should be a support phone number on the plans, but if not you can call Frank (Smokerplans.net) ... He will answer your questions.

I called the number on the plans. NOW it all makes sense! The big warming box can also be used as a smoker itself! What an awesome idea! This thing seems to be pretty well thought out! And did I mention gigantic??? lol

I searched big pappas posts and saw his pictures of his build. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then that post is worth a million words! It answered all of the questions I had and a few I would have had later!!

That is one gnarly smoker wsiddoway!
I was thinking that to get my tongue weight proper that I could sit the smoker where I think it should be on the trailer, then stick a bathroom scale under the tongue and see what it reads, then adjust from there.
The trailer is 16' long and a little over 6' wide with tandem 3500 lb axles. Would it be a huge issue if I sat the unit all the way to one side of the trailer? I was thinking I could somewhat even the weight out by using the other side for sinks, water tanks, wood storage etc. I'm sure that the smoker side will still be heavier, but does anyone know from experience if this will cause issues with the way the trailer pulls?

I am not the expert here, but I think you will be fine.

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.
