FB to CC 1/2 moon calculations.

Post by Twinpop » July 11th, 2013, 9:34 am

I have seen this question asked numerous times now. I will share how I figured this out for my smoker.
The one thing I have learned is that nerds love to make calculators and put them on the net. You just have to take time to find them.

This one figures the partial area of a circle. http://www.handymath.com/cgi-bin/arc18.cgi?submit=Entry
Hope this helps.

Thank you for that lake… Once it goes through the moderator approval process we might have to make that a sticky…

Thank you twinpop!

Finally! A calculator to figure the area of a lake!

Actually that is a cool calculator.
Is there one that figures the area of a crescent? I.E. a round baffle plate swinging past a round opening? Height of the crescent apex vs. the percentage of the total area of the round opening? I.E. How far do I have to swing the plate to get 20% open/shut on a draft plate? :-B

My brain knots up just asking the question …

I don't know what Rick said but I'm sure that :rulz: we must have something in the rules about confusing people. I'm one of those people right now!

Thanks for the exercise Rick.

Haven't you ever wondered how far to slide a round cover over a round vent hole to get to halfway? A quarter of the way?

No?

(crickets)

Nothing?

i'll go sit in the corner now ….

Can someone point me in the direction of the lake? I clicked on the link above run the numbers and still can't find the lake. I thought for sure this was some sort of calculator that took into account the curvature of the earth along with moon phase to provide 99.999% accurate directions to the lake.

Dang DC, now I'm back to square one.

I am trying to work backwards so I understand the concept of the calculator...i know my recommended throat cut is About 10" radius. How would I enter numbers in this app to get the suggested correct numbers? Or am I reading this wrong?

The pit calculator gets my ADHD as well...it comes up with something like 65000 cu.in. for the cooker and 22000 cu.in for the firebox. 88% diff...what does all of this mean? That just bears so very little relation to numbers I use every day. Like " oh, that's about 18 inches". Geometry was one of my worst..Algebra was second

Make no mistake, there ain't no powder in this Puff ! And... I'm not really a crazy person but I play one in real life

Here ya go Rick. Good luck!

K_crescent = K_CFD - K_CED
= r2^2[2<CBE - sin(2<CBE)]/2 - r1^2[2<CAE - sin(2<CAE)]/2
= r2^2[2pi - 2<CBA - sin(2pi - 2<CBA)]/2 -
r1^2[2<CAB - sin(2<CAB)]/2
= pi r2^2 - (r1^2<CAB + r2^2<CBA ) +
[r1^2 sin(2<CAB) + r2^2 sin(2<CAB)]/2
