Frank, looking fantastic. :) What are you using for your wheel to raise and lower the grate?

I was thinking of using a pair of trailer young jacks upside down and put the handwheel on the bottom so I didn't have the stuff hanging over the top of the grill, but the more I think about it I think I need to stay traditional. So I think I will use a cast iron handwheel and some sprocket with roller chain. What do you think?

Got the grill mounted to the trailer. Still got plenty of room between the smoker and the grill for some storage boxes and a work surface.

Frank, I like the idea of the sprocket and chain. I saw one a while back at a comp that was simple and user friendly. They had a 3/4" rod going across the top of the grill riding in bushings and the cables were attached to it the hand crank was just the rod bent into a double 90°. The adjuster was on the handle side they had drilled the bushing and rod and a pin on a small chain kept it in place.
Here is a link to one that I really enjoyed watching come together. ggarner built an awesome grill using a come-along gear system for his adjuster.

dang kam! that guy did a great job on that thing. the comealong thing is genius. I like the idea of the 2 different grates. i may need to copy some of his ideas.

Built the fire grate. I used 1/2" rebar, 1"x1" angle for the long sides and expanded metal on top of the rebar. I used some 5/16" roundbar for the handles

ok long post....
well, I worked on the grill tonight. I decided to go ahead and use the trailer jacks for the grate instead of the traditional system. here is a pic of the trailer jacks I used... I forgot to take a pic before I started cutting one of them apart :oopssign:

here is a couple pics of the rest of the parts we used.

ok here is what we did to the jacks to be able to hook them together.

We cut the jack handle on bothe sides of the drive gear and then removed the handle and took the gear out. the gear had a bore of 1/2" so we used a chunk of 1/2" round bar for the shaft between the 2 jacks in order to connect them together.

Next we installed the round bar between the jacks and attached the jacks to the grill.
then we cut the fence post driver up to use for the grate connection. the pipe used for the post driver was large enough ID that it will allow us to keep water out of the innards of the trailer jacks.

Nice build buddy! The rig is very very cool! Need to take it on a tour across the US, we can start with Venice, then on to New Orleans. Going to call this AM on stacks.
