I have a center feed rf. I used the pit calc to design mine.

i'm trying to build a center feed rf smoker from a 190 gallon tank.
i'm building it on top of a square fb, 20x20x20 inch.
according to several calculators this is on the small side...
now i'll be burning charcoal in it and it will only be controlled by a homemade controller with forced air intake.

what's your opinion on this?

I think you'll find the controller is a waste of effort. The lag between input and result is too long on an RF style rig so the controller will likely get "lost" in what it's doing. I found I could do a better job stabilizing temp just old school.

Check out "Edgar is underway" in the RF department on here and notice he has 2 baffle plates - 1 in the roof of the FB plus the normal one running the length of the cook chamber. He was spooky stable/predictable and I think this was why. :D

And on the eighth day God created barbecue …. because he DOES love us and he wants us to be happy. :D
Current smokers: Egor (trailered RF) and Easybake (tabletop pellet drive)

I built a controller with 200 CFM for my center feed RF and finally decided to rebuild the firebox and get rid of the electronics altogether. They just don't work on bigger RF pits like rick mentioned. Making the firebox the right size 100+% of the pit calculator and proper fire management will take you so much further.
