off topic question

Post by smokinwelder » August 2nd, 2013, 7:38 pm

I know this isnt about smokers, but I dont know where else to get an idea other than from cool guys like you...
My boss is 70 years old and talked to me about having me take over the business within the next 1-5 years. He said he is selling due to his age. He owns a welding, machine shop. The company has been running for over 40 years which 12 years he owned. I have worked in this trade for over 15 years, but have only been with him 1 year. We trust one another, and work well together. He said he would gove me 5% of the business for free with no extra responsibilities. He said when I decide to take over I would owe him 95% of whatever we agreed upon after a apraiser came in to evaluate the company. I am 33, and my father and I made an appointment to sit down and discuss more about the business this tuesday. He told me what his overhead is each month/week but when I ask him how much $ he makes its hard for him to tell me because some months he makes more than others. Im planning on talking to him about what goes out, and what comes in over the past 1-3 years to get an idea. He said he will have his accountant wrtite a projection up before our meeting on tuesday. I need advice, and need to know Im not getting into a bad deal. I know I want to do this type of work forever so thats not a issue. I make the company $ and the company had 4 employees including myself. they said they would stay if I baught the company a year or 2 from now. What should I do?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that on a Friday night after a long day of work....it's probably best not to get hope up for good interaction ....I'd give some time for some input

No one knows the situation better than you and the owner. It's really hard to give advise without having more information. To make decisions like this you need to know the financial status of the company including but not limited to credit standing with creditors and suppliers. Also you need to know the legal status of the company.

You really need to go through something called a do-diligence process to make this decision.

Virtually impossible to go through the do-diligence process in that amount of time.

I'm relatively new around here, but i'll throw in my 2 cents...

I don't know what your current work schedule is, but most shops I know like that, you work your 40 or 50 hours a week, go home on friday and not think about work again until monday. When you're the owner, you don't get to do that. You get to wonder/worry about everything currently being done in the shop and if it'll get done on time and within budget. Plus, you get the fun of doing paper work (unless you hire someone for that). Some people simply aren't cut out to deal with the stress of running a business, and I don't personally know you, so you could be one of those types who could do it without yanking your hair out...

I hate to sound like mr. negative, but my dad runs 2 different businesses and it seems like he's in a bad mood more often than not. Plus I own a small machine/fab shop which i run part time and it can sometimes get to me.

Good luck with your decision.

Josh

thanks josh. as of now i work 45 hours a week same as owner. off sat sun. i see him sometimes pull his hair out, and mentioned that to him. he got a kick out of it. i know running a business isnt easy or everyone would do it. But I do trust my boss. i dunno, tues ill know a lot more.....hopefully I can make a decision then. Joe

It has been my experience that if I'm looking into something important, and something else comes up that forces me to rush a decision, I don't allow the forcing item to dictate my schedule. "Haste makes waist" is not just a catchy saying. You said you were offered a job, what you looking at isn't a job, it's a business opportunity. So don't let one cloud your judgment over the other. If you want the job take it, if you want a business, take the time to make sound decisions.

Truth be told...
If you have never BEEN in business, it is not wise to purchase a business....

you do not know what you are buying! There is a ton of hard life lessons you must first learn that can not be learned any other way but to start a business from the ground up. Take my word for it- it is far, far, far cheaper to start it yourself!!!

So I guess after hearing several wise and successful business owners… You decided to go against what advice is been given?

And FYI we did discuss your issue on the radio show in case you're interested you could go back to the archives and listen to it…

And I am speaking from direct experience about buying an existing business… It's got bad news usually written all over it unless you are an experienced business buying person…

But this is just my opinion you can take it for what it's worth…
