Mallberry wood to smoke with ???

Post by Lowej82 » September 8th, 2013, 11:03 am

Around here Mallberry is a garbage tree we cut them down and make them disappear as fast as possible.

Ive heard thats its good to use in a wood burner as it burns really hot once its dried out. After joing the forums I have been reading a little about ppl comparing to apple as far as smoking with it.

Anyone personally use it? main heat source or just flavor? is it like apple?

Ive been stacking some hickory and a little apple and cherry, Ive considered chunking some up and selling it online just unsure what would be a good common size. I do tree work and we are always taking down good smoking trees and running them straight through the grinder.

Here is a link to a PDF that lists all the different woods for smoking. Looks like Malberry is a winner.

Are yall referring to Mulberry? …I've used Mulberry and it's a very light flavor like alder but doesn't seem to put out as much heat as other woods I've used.

As for size I think a 14 to 17 inch length is about right and max 3 inch cross-section on most pieces would make most pitmasters pretty happy.

And on the eighth day God created barbecue …. because he DOES love us and he wants us to be happy. :D
