My UDS build begins....

Post by Lowej82 » September 28th, 2013, 9:35 pm

Picked up two 55g drums this evening along with a 16g drum I couldn't resist the little guy, Will be burning them out tomorrow afternoon. I placed a couple ads for old weber grills on facebook and will be placing one on craigslist as well.

Image

The 55g drums are 23" round on the outside and 22 3/8" on the inside of the lip and 35" tall. The 16g drum is 14.5"/14" & 27 1/4" tall.

Will be posting pictures along the way along with many questions I am sure.

CURRENT UDS BUILD COST $0.00 free drums with at least 6 more waiting at location. :grillin:

Very nice. FYI, a Weber Smokey Joe lid will fit on the 16 gal drum. They make great travel sized drums.

Thanks SmokinFF I was hoping to find a lid for the 16g drum as I thought it would be perfect for camping or something like that.

I got a little done today but not much.

The drums were closed so I had to cut the tops out, So I cut it just on the inside of the lip.

Image

After cutting the top out it left a sharp edge around the top of the drum so I used a right angle grinder and smoothed it out.

Image

Tommorow I will get the holes drilled at the bottom for the vents and then do the burn off, thinking I will use 4 3/4" holes with a gate valve one and caps on the rest.

I decided to wait to do the burn until I get the high temp paint to repaint after it cools. I didnt get much done today except for getting four 3/4" holes drilled 2 3/4" from bottom to make it 1 1/2" from the bottom on the inside.

I scored a FREE rotissorie from a gas grill, I think if I cut the 2nd drum just below the first ring I could persude it to slide into the top of the uds. Then I could mod the that cut off section for the rotissorie.

Does anyone now if lowes/box stores carries the paint in quarts or by the gallon?

It's not bad using rattle cans. It only takes to for a good finish.

What I am unsure on is primer, do they make a high temp primer also?

Well I didnt make any progress today, I did go pick up some high temp paint and nuts/bolts for grill support. A local box store has the grill grates I need for $19.99e havent checked anywhere else.

Also can old grill grates be re painted with the high temp paint?
It's 1000f degree rated, well above the smoking range and states non toxic once dry.

I think until Ifind a lid for my 55g drum its gonna be put on hold.

I remebered a guy not to far from me who does a lot of scrapping, So I stopped by (normally im taking him scrap crap) I start telling him what I needed for my 55g uds build whem I look over and :wtf: theres a smaller weber lid, So I run out to the truck to get a tape to measure with and sure enough its a perfect fit for that 16g drum \m/ 16g uds build begins while I locate a lid for the 55g.

I wouldn't paint anything that goes inside the cook chamber of any kind of cooker. Put a little veggie oil on it and season it that is all that is needed.
