Today I managed to do the hardest join, which was the bottom of the sloped front. Annoyingly the flat lower piece was too long and overlapped the slope by about 6-7mm. I cut it down with the grinder, pushed it in flat and welded all the way along. Also started to cut with a thin disk between the two unwelded sheets about half way down to give space for filler to fill and to give the butt joints strength once the weld is cleared up. Will have the rest of the cabinet welded completely in the next few days, pending rain, then I can cut the door :-D

It seems like there's always something that doesn't go quite like you plan doesn't it .

It takes half the fun out of the build when you make no mistakes to have to do over.

Did more today got one end welded up and cleaned entirely. Had to call a friend to help me roll it over to the other side, then it got dark. Going to weld and clean that end tomorrow then ive only got three full length (1.25M) seems to weld and the cabinet is done. Once ive cut the door im going to bulk up the joins especially in the corners with the mig to make sure its nice and strong as the TIG welds are quite small, although the heat has penetrated properly so it should have welded all the way through to the inside, but we will find out.

Thinking of using this for insulation. Seems cheap compared to some other places, am I missing something, will this be suitable?

Thanks,

Pete.

Good Grief! That looks perfect!
Certainly has the heat rating. How thick is it?

FWIW - Edgar was built with ceramic insulation at only half that thickness.

I know from experience he works great on days down in the teens (non-metric degrees F) and is pretty frugal on fuel too.

I think you'll like it :D

The cooking chamber is all welded!! Whoooo. Now to clean up the welds and then mark and cut the door. Exciting.

My gas cylinder collection is growing....

Got the door cut today.

I marked the door, then stuck wooden battens down with double sided tape, I like to follow the wood with the thin cutting disk to get a straight smooth cut.

Before I made the final cuts I welded some steel tabs on to stop the door falling inside the cooking chamber.

Looks good :-D

I should also point out that this is no longer a centre feed reverse flow, this is now a gravity feed reverse flow... im gonna try and blaze a trail, caus I cant find any offset reverse flow with a stumps style gravity feed... if the gravity feed system dosn't work, il take it off and forget about the whole business and go back to centre feed, but i really hope it does work on a cooker this size and this layout. Should do....

I'm sure you all know how gravity feed works, but here's my crappy doodle on the general layout of the proposed final cooker....

Looks workable. Is there room to add a shadow plate in the plenum above the fire throat opening but below the BP?

Just thinking about preventing a hot spot…. :D
