275 gal fuel oil tank RF smoker

Post by dwwantasmoker » November 11th, 2013, 7:44 pm

I'm new here but I've been looking at this sight for a while. I'm building a RF smoker and I am copping smokeinthenoke's
idea, but I would like to put a warming box on top of the firebox and I was wondering if I was to put the two 4" stacks throw the warming box would it get to hot ? Or would it effect the smoker its self ?

Welcome to the site. I am thinking the stack would not give you much extra temp.

Thanks, I have been working on my first build, and I know its not my design but I'm building it a little different. and it will be mounted on a 16' trailer. if anyone has ideas on how I should build the warming box I would appreciate any ideas.

Every time I've attempted a warming cabinet the challenge was to keep the warming cabinet cool enough. Just running your stack pipe through the warmer cabinet sounds like a good idea but put in 2 vents for fresh air - one low and one high so you can pull the cabinet temp back down…. imho :D

Thanks, Gizmo I was thinking of insulating it with high temp insulation. I didn't think of vents. mike Im new at this forum thing and as soon as I can figure out how to put pics on I will get some on and I appreciate any and all feed back good or bad. its only been a week and I'm totally addicted to building these thing. I have a line on a 300 gal round tank and thinking about building it for a hole Hog cooker for the back of the trailer.

Welcome to the addiction!! Even if you don't have pics, it might be good to scratch out our idea on paper and post it for us to give you feedback.

I think Gizmo is right, but I don't know that the exhaust will put off much heat.

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

I should add that I was heading for 140F as a target temp since it's usually the recommended legal minimum "hold" temp for meat while waiting to serve because I don't want it to cook any further when I put it in there. :-B

I'll assume we have the the same 275 oil tank. You will find that unless it's a huge hog, the room inside this tank can do a whole hog. I doubled up on my racks and shortened my trailer to 8 foot from 12. There are some great thoughts here on how and why things go together a certain way. Personally, my only experience in smokers had been on TV from BBQ Pitmasters or food network.

Today I have a welder in my hand and a really nice smoker coming down the pike guided by some of the great members of this forum. Just search around for 275 oil tank. You'll see I have no shortage of questions or pictures of my build and trailer there might even be one of the dog!

Welcome from the east coast and good luck.

Make no mistake, there ain't no powder in this Puff ! And... I'm not really a crazy person but I play one in real life

Thanks, the video helped a lot. but I think its me I had to zip the pics to make them smaller, so im trying to figure out how to do this without zipping the file. but if you guys can see them I will finish putting the rest on and work on resizing them another way later. Thanks again.

This software supposedly down-sizes pics and it's free. I've never used it tho.
