wine barrel?

Post by capt j-rod » November 26th, 2013, 5:26 pm

I have access to wine barrels, anybody ever try it? I can line the bottom with steel if needed. There are some pics of others online, but it looks like they use electric? Help!

That has been shown on here but it's waaaaay back there maybe fall of 2011. I remember it was a PITA to operate according to the builder/owner but MAN WAS IT COOL LOOKING!

He also said you had to be very careful to keep the inside moistened or it would heat/dry out/ and crack the barrel.
That's when I dropped the idea. I too have access to wine barrels so I've been thinking of maybe a cold smoker? :-B

Amazing timing.... In changing up welding on my smoker, I am in the process of cutting up an old wine barrel and using it as a cold smoker only for cheeses. I have one of the pellet trays for the bottom ( delivered today) and have gotten all of the barrel staves secured to the rings. There is a front loading door to make loading and unloading easier than going through the top. Hinges are my next challenge. I can post a few pics later tomorrow

Keeping it wet is the key. (Wine barrel, DC) I thought I wanted to try one too, but I think it will work on one for cold smoke too. Looking forward to pics, Puff.

From what I come to understand, the cold smoker should not exceed 90 degrees... Im guessing other than taste, any container might prove suitable as long as the smoke can pass around the cold smoking items inside

I thought I would have more time to email the pictures to my computer to post here but this is the barrel I started with

Because it is only a cold smoker, there are several liberties I am taking that wouldn't hold up as well in a hot barrel...you'll see that in the other pictures

My grandmother showed me how to rebuild a barrel, remove the top, seal it again so that it is water tight...all with just a hammer and small chisel
