Odd design, but it works!

Post by NC smoker » December 4th, 2013, 10:43 pm

I had a family member who was trying to get rid of an old grill that he had/made. I decided to take this grill n as a project to make a smoker. It is an odd design and it shouldn't work but it does! The thing is even efficient and consistent. On a side note, I was also learning to weld the hard way as I dove into this project. My girl friend and I had just split up so I didn't need to engagement ring fund any longer, so I now had a smoker fund and plenty of time! I bought the tools and supplies that I needed and got to work!

Here is where I began.
Image

Another view as I began
Image

The was rusted out and rough
Image

I cut the old bottom out
Image

and welded in a new out of 3/16 plate
Image

Plans to make the cut for the firebox
Image

firebox cut the fit. I know this looks strange. It probably gets worse before it gets better.
Image

Knowing how thin the metal is in a barrel, I have aded several layers to get it to this point
Image

For some dumb reason I thought the ash pan should be curved on the bottom. I did enjoy using the hammer that much though!

It has a large opening into the CC

A look at the back of the firebox. I'm not using a basket since I have the grates in place.

I got the baffle plate welded into place

The firebox surround is in place. Befor sealing it up I packed it full with mineral wool insulation.

Adding thermometers.

I decided to make a grill for it as well. Here is its humble beginnings.
Image
Image

I mounted the grill on a rail system so that it can slide out
Image

Wood racks for plenty of working area

This shows the grill when its slid out

Prepped for paint

I've cooked up to 200 pounds of meat at once and it turned out great! I haven't filled the smoker completely full yet…
I think I have work to do! :biggrillin:

What a massive smoker. Congrats on building it yourself.

Is it normal for one testicle to be larger than the other two?

You definitely did a great job on the remodel!

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

Thank you all for your kind words! I had a blast building this thing and I'm looking forward to my next build. That build will start next year (January probably.) I have some Q to cook between now and then! :grillin:
