First Build

Post by Flareside » March 12th, 2011, 6:16 pm

Ok if I can get the pictures loaded, I will be doing something!.
This is what I have to start with.
The Tank will be taken off the trailer so I can remove the extra boat stuff and add some more braces.
I'm wondering if I should add more to the frone of the trailer so there is room for all equipment that will be needed.
Image
The snow is melting so it's time to get busy!.
I am also thingking the firebox will run the lenght of the tank and be behind it instead of at the end like most RF smokers.
It has to be big enough to put stuff back there to keep warm if needed.
Ideas? Comments?
Eager to learn!

 a smokerbuilder after my own heart
those are great tanks for reverse flows! I'm anxious to see your build. if you do a reverse flow with the firebox and the cookchamber running parralel with eachoter you got to be careful for uneven cooking temps. people most often wind up putting some kind of power draft on them it seems. one way to do it is to cut your firebox hole in the center of the cook chamber but you wind up with direct heat hitting the bottom of the baffle plate in the center and creating a hot spot. so they try to use a piece of pipe between the firebox and cookchamber and it is usually too small. in my honest opinion your way better of to do a firebox on one end. it can be done but the design is real critical :D

Ok I finally made it back here to update this.
Hopefully I get this up correctly.
As pictured above, I started with an old boat trailer and a water tank from a cement truck. I took it to a local welding shop since I don't have the tools to do this myself. I laid out drawings and spec sheet and explained what I wanted.

I stopped in to see how things were going and I'm glad I did.
It seems I did not explain how I wanted my damper to work and with the firebox already made, it was time to improvise I guess.

Image
I used a spreadsheet that someone sent me to calculate my firebox, teh air vents, stacks, etc but I think I made an error in calculations somewhere.
The Firebox!

A couple shots of the rough finish.

It has not been blasted or painted yet however I have used it for several smokes.
There is an issue with not getting the doors tight, but I have a solution for that.
I think the firebox is way too big but for now, does the job.
It does take alot to heat it but being a computer junky I figure this is Nube Smoker version 1.1 with updates to follow.
Thanks for checking it out.

Dan

Looks kind of like a center feed to me but I can't tell from the pics just where the baffle is. How long does it take to get it up to temp? What is your solution to sealing your doors - having problems of my own too... thx - rick :)

And on the eighth day God created barbecue …. because he DOES love us and he wants us to be happy. :D

Looking good.

Thinking out loud here, I wonder how well this rig would work if it had a baffle plate welded to the rear of the tank. And ran the length end to end. Leaving the gap at the front, guessing it to be about 2 or 3 inchs. And having the stack in the center toward the rear.

Like I said, just thinking.

Also, whats the solution for the doors?

+1 thats what i was going to to do with mine as far as the doors i would go with a refract gasket or try to bend them back
