I think it will work, it may get ash on the threads sometimes, but it should be ok.

Ahh I didn't think about the ash. I can weld a capped piece of 1/2" tubing on the back side of the nut so the threads r protected. Thanx for pointing that out. Anyone ever do it this way?

It should work just fine. Frank has done some of those in the past. They worked, but as mentioned, keep an eye on ash buildup.

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

That's how I did mine and I love it! My stack has a plate on it that seals flush and my air inlet seals tight, just like yours, which allows me to shut down my smoker totally! I dig it!

Are you talking about the 90* piece above the opening? If so, that's to keep rain out of the inlet.
