Thank you but... Your saying then that when you gift the door hatch, the entire front is open to the fire source? Is that correct? Is that a possible dangerous situation when you might lift the door open during a high heating event? I might be a little confused on this
EdIT: Forgot to ask, did you incorporate your removable stack design on this one?
Make no mistake, there ain't no powder in this Puff ! And... I'm not really a crazy person but I play one in real life
Puff the 6 inch front panel of the CC does not move. Placing the gap along the front of a 40 inch BP means it only has to be 2 inches wide to get the same 80 sq. inches of gap that matches the throat (4 X 20). At those angles the fire core can never see anything but the bottom of the BP - as it should be.
Yes the stack separates just above the flu damper - my photography isn't the best in the late evening like this but the stack changes from black to red and that's the connection point. More pics next Saturday….

Thank you Gizmo, A few weeks ago when I'd mentioned the "rectangular" cooker.....THIS IS IT !! I would love to learn how to go thinner skins with insulation so weight wise, it can be more manageable...
I can't say enough about how much I like this design of yours. I was going to keep the oil tank for a while before giving it to a friend ...I'm only keeping it know to learn how to use it...then....whoosh, it outta here! Looking forward to the other pics and performance stats

It is about the perfect size and with the tongue being removable easy to store in the corner when not in use.
And if you do get prints made up I'm in for the first set unless Puff want's the first. You know he could probably read the prints
whereas I would hope for lots of pictures
Uh! I work from the pictures first.... when it really screws up and I'm really disgusted, then I read the directions. I tend to think very very few people truly lay out the instructions, inventory the parts and check off each step along the way.. I've never known someone yet that does that.

Checking for level - maybe a couple inches lower on the hitch ball…..
…. and he's got lights…. he even turns the same direction as the tow vehicle

That is one sweet rig right there Gizmo, the name plate is awesome too. Those details make the cooker special. So how are you going to tow it to the gathering?
Current Smokers: Backyard RF Offset and Hybrid RF Offset trailer rig with Cowboy cooker and fish fryer, always room for more........
Baby steps - We'll have to see how it goes the next few weeks taking it to some nearby locations first….
Part of the reason Egor is the design that he is was to keep him small enough and light enough that he can be double pulled. With the Jeep on it's tow-bar behind my camper (not a standard ball hitch), it is actually legal to add Egor behind the Jeep. Legal and responsible are sometimes different things however ….
I do have a friend that for years has always pulled his 25 foot 5th-wheel behind a full size pickup plus a 19 foot boat/motor/trailer behind that (barely under legal length) - he never has any problems. Course he attends church regularly too so there's that …..

The one on Orvis came out so nice I also thought I needed a small shelf in front of the CC door. HOWEVER, unlike Orvis, my CC handle doesn't quite clear a 12 oz. refreshment can the way his does. Needless to say this is not my best work …..

Don't get me wrong - I love beer.
But I don't use it in cooking anymore - I think it's the hops that gives the food a sour taste….

What downsides present themselves by placing the cook chamber more completely over the firebox . Say you had 6-10" protruding from behind instead of the entire FB. Then cut either a direct throat from the top of the FB into the floor of the CC or a duct from the rear of the FB to the front floor of the CC?
Basically keeping the complete footprint of the unit within 36" front to back?

I think it would be okay but there are a couple things to consider….
1) The more you overlap the 2 compartments the higher the efficiency of the heat transfer so the colder the fire has to be (for the same cook temp) which takes you further away from the full-on hot fire that makes the thin blue smoke.
I really wish I was smart enough to quantify this issue so I could actually work it into some designs but I have to go to night school just to be an idiot on some subjects - like thermodynamics.
2) You'll probably want an intermediate shadow plate (as we've started calling them) to prevent an incredibly noticeable hot spot directly over the throat. Not really a problem - probably just need to have one.

I've been thinking about this all day and it seems to all boil down to your first point about the thin blue smoke. Since the goal of a good smoker is the thin blue smoke (TBS) it appears to define all the other parameters. If the cost of TBS is too hot a fire , uncontrollable temperatures or too much fuel it becomes less practical.
I think the footprint reduction is a nice idea but you're looking at compromise too extreme for ease of use. I'm wondering if some kind of trap might allow the fire to be hot but cool the transferred heat on the way to the BP?
When does your night school start?

Boy I hear you there. To further BTU this thread - Every time I think about a trap of some sort I remember that "HEY … how about I just build a smaller fire" …. DUH!
Then I realize I can only control the fire size so far before I'm looking for specially cut briquettes and miniature wood splits and I'm back to arguing practicality with myself….. It's a conundrum… but a fun one.
I keep thinking a flat top grill built into the FB roof for the portion that sticks out of the side of the CC would be a good use for that surface AND a logical way for the rig to sweat some heat on it's way to the cooking grate.
After all - the most basic definition of a smoker is a device that allows a fire to burn healthy on one end at the temperature it wants but looses the correct amount of heat to create the temperature we want on the other end to cook at while sharing the smoke for flavor.. That's it. One concept with dozens of ways to make it happen - has all the makings for a good hobby…..
