Help with new build-vertical wood burner

Post by gkyork » March 17th, 2014, 10:16 am

Hi all
I have been around awhile-looking and learning :) I have finally decided on the smoker type I want to build. I am going for a vertical CC with an FB underneath- similar to a UDS concept. I have an old 30 gallon tank from a water heater for the CC and a old 20 lb propane tank for the FB. My questions are this, what size to make the air inlets? the FB to CC opening? and lastly how much 'stack' would I need? Will the Feldon calc help me out here? AS I get this thing tacked and what not I will do some pics, but for now- Thoughts Ideas? Thanks

Youll need dimensions on your CC and FB and then plug them in to the PitCalc and that will get in the ball park on the unlets, throat, and then depending on size of stack u go with itll tell you how long it needs to be.

Try out the calculator on the board index page. It'll give you answers to all your questions.

the rules are very different with vertical smokers. are you planning on using charcoal or wood? if your using mostly charcoal then you will find a very small amount of charcoal will run the smoker for a very long time and will use a very small amount of combustion air.

Mr Frank
my plans are to use wood, but burned down to coals, feeding the firebox as needed to maintain temps.

If the weather agrees tomorrow I am gonna take some measurements and put this thing to paper. Soon I will scan it and post it to get more experienced feedback. Paper is cheaper and easier to get than metal :)

You can disregard the stack size in the calculator and have any size/length you want that seems reasonable. I would include a damper on the stack to slow things down if needed. You get a lot of convection in a vertical.

If it's tourist season, how come I can't shoot 'em?

Any Updates on this project? I am thinking about the same idea; I have a Water Heater Tank and 15 Gallon Drum.

Thanks!
