So, after four months at the powder coater's waiting for its turn, the smoker is done and in the shop for final assembly.

...and she's done. Of course it snowballed rapidly (thanks in no small part to this website LOL) but the project was awesome. The thing turned out looking great but best of all it works perfectly and that is most definitely thanks to this website. All of the resources, pictures and help you guys offer made it all possible. A lot of the details were just our own fun way to solve problems, but the technical problems and critical dimensions were all solved right here in these pages and I can't thank you all enough. This thing is bad to the bone and should provide many years of faithful service (as long as I can keep someone from stealing the damned thing). The special silicone based high temp powder coat came out great. I paid good money for it don't get me wrong, but it really adds a nice touch to a project that turned out looking great and it's super durable to boot, so hopefully I won't be on the hook to paint this thing every few years, Hopefully LOL, Anyway thanks again guys! I'll post a few more pics after I break this thing in and get some meat rendered properly.

Exactly! Bottled Water! That's what was on my mind when I built those, and definitely not spilling beer!!!! Hahahaha

I've been looking through your build this morning an noticed your "great race" t-shirt and that the shop looks familiar. You don't happen to work at Honest Charley's do ya? Do you still road rally?

Oh and I like your build!

Yeah I work for the tire company/honest charley. I picked up the propane tank while we were pulling an old chevrolet out, it was a refill tank from an old chevy dealership from the old LP truck days. We built the smoker in the shop over the course of a few weekends.
I am a video producer for the companies including Great Race, that's where the shirts come from. We go on all of the races working.

Cool! Tell Greg C. That Matt brewer says hello... He'll be dumbfounded. I did the great race (along with greg) in '98 and '99

Finally got the first smoke in today. two weeks ago i got the house brand nomex seal in. didn't relly need it, but i bought early on in the build, so on it went. Out of town last weekend and today I lit the fire and loaded two chickens, a dozen legs and a slab of ribs onboard for the first load test. Admittedly I didn't do much homework before the cook, just got some hickory, google smoking chickens, came up with 250 for 3-5 hours and off we went. It all came off looking pretty good but my guess is that a little research and a few trial and error runs will dial in spot on.
The smoker performed perfectly. I started the fire with charcoal, then put two split hickory logs on it when it settled. I added one stick about every long hour and short of a few minute adjustments, couldn't shake it off of 220 degrees. I actually had to bump it open to keep it there as the logs burned down. It definitely is stable down low just like i wanted it. I really liked how slowly it reacted to what i considered very small adjustments on the intake air. I think i will be able to start with three logs in the future instead of two and gain a couple degrees of latitude. Anyway, it wasn't absolutely perfect meat, but I'm very happy with the first outing. Thanks again everybody!
