First build, anyone mind checking my numbers?

Post by haligen » June 16th, 2014, 10:30 pm

Finally decided to build a real smoker and ditch the vertical propane cabinet. I happened to have a 100lb cylinder already and a good bit of 1/4 plate. After exhaustive reading I decided to give center feed a whirl and feeding my numbers into feldon's calc this is what I came up with. Would love any insight anyone could give before I put welder to steel.

Cooker
100lb Propane tank at 14.5" x 42" 6932cu in
Fire Box 14"x14"x14" 2310 cu in 118% size diff
Chimney 4" at 11" long
FB air inlet 4”x2"
FB to CC hole Opening 6"x4"

Shadow Plate 1/4"
1.25" off bottom

shadow plate top at 1.5" from the bottom
baffle plate at 3" from the bottom
cooking grate at 7.25"

Door cut from 12 o'clock to the bottom of the grate

According to our calculator it seems right.

If it's tourist season, how come I can't shoot 'em?

I've built a number of 100 lbs smokers. Looks like your cals are correct. They make a nice little cooker.

Thats a great looking smoker CRS. Was it just easier to square up the cylinder to mate the firebox instead of notching it or was it just for esthetics? Notching it looked like a bit of a pain so I was just going to set mine up for center feed. This build viewtopic.php?f=11&t=3210 is what I was thinking of shooting for.

Either one will make a nice cooker. The only big difference in my opinion is; the center feed needs to be very controlled seals so that the fire can remain small enough to not overheat the CC. Where an offset can burn at it's normal flame like an campfire. I use sticks so I feel better about having a hotter fire so the smoke remains thin and blue.

When do you plan on starting your build?

I tsp/soap/water filled the tank a few days ago. Basically ready to start any day that I can settle on whether I should go center or offset feed. After seeing CRS' build I'm really leaning towards offset, and with rodcrafter's bit of info on fire maintenance that's probably the route I'm going to go. Might try to start cutting tonight since I'll be out of town on business all next week. I'll make sure to take plenty of pics since it never happened without photographic evidence.

Boy Haligen, you got that right for sure!!!!!!!!!!!

If you cook with lump charcoal go center feed, if with sticks I would say offset.

There is always another way to do this stuff. It is all about your preferences.
