Starting a 110 gallon build

Post by Mankussm » July 2nd, 2014, 8:15 pm

Hey Guys,
I have been lurking on this site for quite some time now. I have learned a lot about RF smokers, and I finally took the plunge this weekend. I was able to get a 110 propane tank from CL for $75. Then I was able to grab some steel from the local scrap yard. My payload includes 2 4'x4' sheets of 1/4 steel, 30ft 1x1 box steel, 10ft 2.5x2.5 1/4 box steel, HD steel casters, 5 3ft 3in 1/4 angle iron, and a ton of mesh.

The tank had about a 1lb of propane still in it, so I followed the rules and filled it with water and Dawn soap for a day. Yesterday I mocked up my FB to CC cut, and today made the cut. Tomorrow I plan to burn out the tank and then cut the door sometime over the holidays.

I took Feldon's BBQ calculator and this is what I have. Any input is gladly welcome.

Czar,
Off of the Feldon's calculator this is what i got:

CC: 25410 CI
FB: 9680 CI 20x22x22 which is 114% recommended size
Chimney: 4inx36in
FB Air Inlet: 10inx3in = .97 intakes
FB to CC: 77 Square inch

Does this look right?

Looks like you hit the jackpot on the tank and steel! If you don't mind my asking what are the dimensions of the tank? I am looking at a tank for a patio build that I think is about the same size. Looking forward to seeing how your build comes together for ideas.

Catfish,
I plan to have this complete by early-mid August. I can only work on this on the weekends and occasionally after work. I plan on posting photos along the way. It will definitely be a learning experience for me, and I hope to help anyone along the way.

Diameter 24"
Length 60"

Started the burn process today. I will need to cut the door out to get the most out of this burn. With only the FB to CC cut, the fire was getting choked out from no air intake vent. It looks like it only burnt one side of the tank.

I started with a couple pallets.

Today's work: Cut 4 - 20" x 22" of 1/4in plate
Tomorrow's work: Cut 2 - 22" x 22" of 1/4in plate for top and bottom FB plate, then mark up and cut door on tank.

Can someone look over my math?

CC volume = 25410 cu. in. actual
FB volume = 8470 cu. in. recommended

Chimney volume = .05 x 9680 = 484 cu. in. ( 4" ID stack X 38" tall above the CC )

FB to CC recommended opening = .008 X 9680 = 78 Sq. in. ( 12" r x 5.5" height )

RF plate area 78 X 1.5 = 116 sq. in. ( 12" r x 7.25" height )

Today I cut the tanks legs off, marked up the door, and cut it. Tomorrow I will burn it again :headwall: Maybe this time I will get all the paint off...
