I would use the FB door kit. It's a matter of cutting out a chunk and bolting it on. Think it would be less of a headache down the road. I'd use the legs to just for added support.
Current Smokers: Junk Char Griller, Mini UDS (Hydrant build), UDS (Bud Select can)
I have the door kit on the burner the top barrel I have is a open top with a ring and lid I am thinking of using the the lid as a door.It also came with 4 collars and legs to connect the top and bottom barrel can I just use the collars to connect the barrels or do I need to use the legs. Also where do I place and how big of a exhaust stack do I need. Thanks for the info.
you could always make a set of hinges for the top barrel, like some of the UDS have, and then make a couple sliding shelves on the inside of the top one for the trays to slide in and out of, and maybe a toggle latch to hold it closed, JM2C
Thanks everyone barrel top door with slide out racks is the way I have decided to go.Now the flue on top or near the grate I have been reading about stale smoke what is better?
UDS's have a slow air exchange anyway - I'd put the stack out the top with only a lip sticking inside for welding…..
And on the eighth day God created barbecue …. because he DOES love us and he wants us to be happy.

Ok I ran out of collars I am looking at a curved take off collar for a a/c system with a damper in it will it be safe to use it is for the stack not between the barrels
I have a question I have come up short on collars I need one more for the stack can I use the curve collar for Home Depot for the stack it all ready has a damper in it
I have been working on and off getting this smoker built going slow but almost there.looking into a rack using pipe so I can make it slide in and out. I also have some firebrick is it a good idea to put them in the fire box? Thanks for all the help so far.
Biggest thing to remember is make sure everything seals tightly so you can get some control over operation. often this type of smoker runs hot cuz they aren't sealed tightly
