Gravity Feed... Painted

Post by Puff » October 28th, 2014, 3:39 pm

Today was 70 degrees with a forecast of rain and 50s over the next 5-6 days. No choice but to get home early and mix up the paint. So, here it is. Stripped of all hardware but painted. Took about 15 minutes from trigger squeeze to the start of cleaning the gun.

Looks good.
Did you use automotive paint or some type of high temp paint?

Thank you guys,

That is simple automotive enamel thinned about 5% with acetone over regular primer. Tough choice for a color so red was the default winner. I wanted to use a rich cobalt blue until I saw the purple GF in Frank's shop. And purple is a long time, absolute favorite of mine.

On the other hand, about 2 months from now, the door is going to a friend of mine who does amazing murals on motorcycles. He is doing a very special graphic that I've been looking for over the last 2 months. We traded some work back and forth so it works out for both of us.

In the mean time, I'll test some temperatures inside the box and more important for the paint, the outer surfaces. If it gets too hot on the outside skin, there may be a problem. So far it seems good. And if it isn't, this graphic is too cool so the smoker becomes a lawn ornament.

( just joking )

Hahaha... It's amazing how it gets everywhere. Color sure looks like it but it's called flaming red. That's funny but I have to admit, my shoes ARE misted red as are some other parts.

And that's after 24 hours, acetone, and two showers

I've got to know, does anyone know how is the diamond/x shape done on the front sheet metal? Getting ready to start a backwoods type cabinet smoker and would love to finish it off that same way.

It's called a cross break, I think.
I did mine in a metal brake. I took the outer skin and made the cross before I bent the lips. Usually takes a good size brake, depending on door size.

Bent it how? Just a really small bend on each corner or something? Will be working with a 48" hd brake, so bending shouldn't be a problem.

Lay the full sheet in using the corners for the straight line across (1top, 1bottom corner) the brake, then bend it slightly. Then turn sheet to the next 2 corners and bend again. Take a diagonal measurement to see if the sheet will fit in the brake.

Oh yeah, cut your notches for your flaps first. Be sure what will be inside of the skin is up.

Flaps= edges, lips
My door is two pieces sandwiched with roxul in between. I don't remember gauge off the top of my head.

So here it is. This winter the door comes off and it is getting a custom paint finish and lettering. It was surely worth it

Means a lot to me coming from you...Thank you very much. The door graphics should push it over the top..so to speak ! MAYBE done by January, you know how temperamental some people can be. My friend KNOWS he is an artist. I could just smack him.
