Newbie from Kauai, Hawaii

Post by Kekoa » November 1st, 2014, 9:26 pm

Hello,

I am new to the forum and just wanted to give a what's up! I have been smoking for a number of years and really enjoy the whole process of it. Generally I used side box smokers all this time. For some reason I have this desire to build me a UDS and know I have found my self here at the smokerbuilder.com forum.

I do have a question right out and could not find a thread related to it, although I am sure it is out there. Could any of you direct me to a thread that shares how to build a charcoal basket with out welding. I don't know how to weld and would like to try and build my UDS cheaply.

OK fellas and gals looking forward to this journey. I love it all! :grillin:

Hello,

Welcome ...there are guys here that will gladly direct you to those threads. Personally, I know very little about UDS but I can look forward to reading about your progress.

What kinds of wood do you smoke with out there? :welcome:

Welcome to the crew. I have read about some people making a basket without welding. I would have to get to my computer to look for it

My most immediate thought is to cut out a single piece of expanded metal, then bend the side up to form a box and use wire or hog rings to lock the corners in place

This may not be how it's done but it does satisfy the need

Hi there,

I have smoked with store bought mesquite, hickory and alder before. Out and about I can get guava and kiawe (which is nearly like mesquite). Wondering if mango and/or lychee might be good wood to use, they are fruit woods so I would think should be good.

I think Puffs plan will work for you. I haven't seen a basket that isn't welded, yet.

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

Welcome to the site. You will find plenty of info here to help you. You might try contacting your local school(s) and see if the have a welding or shop class. You could convince them to weld stuff for you in exchange for some tasty smoked meats.

On a side note I vote we move the world headquarters to Hawaii and have some sponsor give all expense paid trips, monthly, for gatherings.

Is it normal for one testicle to be larger than the other two?

You can take expanded and cut it 9 in by 48 inch and roll it around a 20 lb or similar size tank. That will get u close to the dia of the weber coal grate of 16 inchs.

I bet mango would be outstanding pig. IDK what lychee is, but I would try it too!

Welcome aboard.
