Insulation in Gravity fed charcoal pit

Post by stumpjumper » November 9th, 2014, 4:55 pm

I did some research and fiberglass is rated to 1000 degrees. Has anybody tried that instead of mineral wool?

I wish I could just give you and answer but I can share some very recent data I have from my recent build. It is also a heavily insulated gravity feed, I had 12 sheets to use if needed so it is packed in fairly well. During the hottest part of the fire the firebox skin where the coals were was about 200 degrees f. The cook chamber was around 375. The outer skin was 53 degrees f. My insulation is rated about 1800 degrees and cost was about $16.00 a 2'x4' sheet 2" thick.

Keep in mind… I just got a report from his email system… Apparently it's been messed up… So give him some time to sort through it…

After a couple of years of using it I have had no problems with the fiberglass insulation. Cheapest think I have found.

I've used ceramic wool. It's made for high temperature. You can use it only for the fire box area, and regular rock wool for the rest, as the cook chamber walls shouldn't get too hot
