What kind of insulation?

Post by QueTex » January 3rd, 2015, 9:43 am

Happy new year friends, I'm sure this has been discussed but found nothing recent in search.
What is the latest greatest stuff for insulating a firebox or a cabinet smoker and where do you guys recommend I can buy it?
talked with a guy yesterday that said he was going to use some sort of aircraft insulation board, wouldn't tell me where to buy it though.
thanks

Mineral wool. They sell the brand Roxul at Lowes in sheets.

Actually, just checked the Lowes site. They sell Roxul stone wool. According to the Roxul website, it's good to 2,150°F.

Thanks for the replys' but is that a typo?
thanks for the link, it says:
"ROXUL stone wool resists temperatures up to approximately 1177°C (2150°F). It can reduce the spread of a fire and provides valuable extra minutes to save people and property, and reduce environmental damage"
Will stop by Lowes tomarrow.

2,150 degrees is what it's rated for.

I wish I could find it at Lowe's. I've only seen the rolled insulation. Nothing like the stuff I bought on line in 2x4' sheets

All of the stuff I had got at lowes was in bats. Kinda like what would go in your house.

I seen Roxul at Lowes the other day when I was getting some batt insulation for my remodel. I assumed it was sheets because of how it was packaged. I didn't go put my hands on it, but it was about 2x4' pieces, wrapped in plastic and sitting on the floor and was $41 and some change.

They had to order mine. But it was ship to store for free and it only took 2 days. Some stores do keep it in Stock.

Hey Tom, I did see some 3 1/2" Roxul at Lowe's on Thursday, but didn't have a chance to talk to the special order salesman because they had already left for the day. Did they order the 1 1/2" or the 3 1/2 "for you?

Nope. The Lowes stuff is like bats you would use in your house but no paper on it.

Ok, the stuff I used was dense....very very dense and rigid...2" thick and came in 2x4' panels. Frank explained it all to me and I just followed all his advice..

Guess what.....it is absolutely excellent!!! I am running a firebox that .... 2" above the fire, shows a skin temp of 101.6 degrees F. Awesomely awesome ...you can see the clean out door in the photo
