It is based on the cubic inches inside the stack.

I guess I did not word my question right. Say stack height is recommended to be 40"s. Is that if it is installed any where or above the CC or if you install it below the top of the CC do you need to have 40"s above it??

So is the recommended height from the top of the CC, I guess is the simplest way to ask the question?

From what I understand, it's 40" no matter the placement. It's figured so your FB has proper draw to burn correctly.

Question for square doors on CC, would you gurus advise lay flat gasket or wool rope? I plan to use wool rope on FB door. I have read multiple post about rutland's adhesive. But I have read do not use the cement... Can someone help me clarify before I buy the wrong stuff.

Any advise is appreciated.

Made some serious progress today. I got on the welder...scary! I might have welded a total 45 minds before today in my life. But I want to have my own work in this dream not just design and money.

Finally cut the pit open!!

I'd use a flat, self adhesive type gasket on that style door.

What would you guys recommend. I have access to either pipe size. The pit calculator recommends 41" of chimney for 8" pipe or 26" for 10" pipe. 26" would still clear WC by 12-14"s. The 8" pipe would make the highest point of the pit to ground be 110"s/9' overall..

So which route would you guys go?
1. 8" chimney at 41"s Tall
2. 10" chimney at 26"s Tall

Thanks for any input.

Here's my disclaimer .... I completely lack the knowledge and experience to answer this question with real fact despite the volumetric equalities of the dimensions. However, something in my life's experiences...you know like starring into space watching a camp fire or smoke rising from a stack. It seems like you can create a stronger draw on the rising column of exhaust heat with the longer and narrower 8" tube. You could always dampen the top of the stack. Sorry to add to the confusion

But remember the disclaimer. I also know you are really trying to insure that you get everything right. I did the same agonizing on some things that I did go back and re do.

I would go with the larger. There is nothing like walking up and seeing a cooker with a big ol stack on it.

I would say 10" because of the overall height. One thing to consider, since it is going to be so big you will at times have food under it. I would recommend putting something under it to direct any dripping stuff from build up in the stack falling on your food.

I wonder what the science is behind the answer. I defer to the guys with the experience but I am from the school of " you gotta show me first" and I ain't even from Missouri ! I can see that the height may cause clearence issues at times but 15 inches doesn't seem over extended

Thanks fellas

RC- I have been thinking about that very issue having the stack over a CG. I noticed CRS and some others have placed the WC exhaust stack in the center it appears by pics. I am planning to double 45 it and come out the backside. BUT On the main exhaust stack for the CC I was planning to locate it about 10-11 o'clock... being on a 36" wide pit I was wondering about extending an exhaust "drip-catcher" below it inside the CC to direct the drippings to the back wall.

Thanks again to all. Any ideas or pics or drwg for a drip catcher send em my way please! I have an idea just not sure how much room to allow below the exhaust to not obstruct the draft...

Puff- always has something! I get your theory also on a tall stack. But I like having the girth of a 10" exhaust on 500gal cooker.

All the visual aside, it is a big smoker and I'm sure your on your way to a great cooker. I sometimes think too visually myself though. I have a vision about seeing a mesmerizing image of a column of heat rising faster through the taller stack like a Venturi or the burning bush scene in the Ten Commandments with Charleton Heston :D

I'm guessing you'll need a step ladder stashed away somewhere to get to those higher up places on this cooker for what ever may come. If it has any place in your plan....look up "stack elbow" just for the heck of it.
