275-300 gal RF tank smoker

Post by pete farmer » April 3rd, 2015, 9:04 pm

New member here, I'm Pete from NE Tn. Getting ready to build a trailer RF smoker from a old heating oil tank. 275-300 gal, 36" round and 61" long. Looking for ideas as well as where to purchase handles, hinges, dampers.
Thanks for your feedback

First off welcome!

Have you found the pit calculator on the site? The site also sales plans. They could already have a set for your size cooker (plus you get free tech support w/ purchase of plans). The site also has hinges, gaskets, handles...products help keep the site in operation.
Others a lot more knowledgeable than me will be along soon.

If you love Q and wanta build a smoker welcome to smoker builder heaven!

General rules the guys have taught me on my build:
1. Get dimensions in the site pit calculator
2. Top of FB and throat need to be the same elevation as your BP
3. BP is recommended to be 2-5"s below the lowest cooking grate
4. On RF cooker(s) the BP gap on the opposite end of the exhaust and FB is recommended to be the same size as the throat. No bigger
5. FB calculation needs to be 103-110% aim for 107% is the said sweet spot.
Just food for thgt

Good luck! The experts will be along soon... I'm learning. On my first build
