250 gallon patio build

Post by motoridr09 » May 2nd, 2015, 9:45 am

Alright I volunteered to make a smoker for the back patio of the church for the pork and brisket cooks. The drawings are what I'm planning on doing. I have a few questions though.

1.) Should I go with 1 or 2 doors.

2.) How big of an opening should I make that goes from the cc to the vertical box. I plan on making it 3 inches by 10 inches with an adjustable damper.

3.) Will the top of the firebox be enough so the vertical box doesn't get too hot or do I need a second plate with space in between or is that something I'll have to play with?

I know I'm forgetting something but help with these questions will help me get started.

2 doors for sure, unless there is a possibility of something like a whole hog. If you go with one big door put a counter weight on it or make square doors. I put square doors on mine and love it. For the warming cabinet the top of the firebox should be fine, but I am no pro, and I don't know how big to make the opening... I just guessed and it works fine. The important thing is to put some air vents in the warming cabinets so you can let cool air in to keep the cabinet cooler.
Just the info I received when I had the same questions. Hope it is helpful, but I know someone will provide more info, the people here are very helpful. :kewl:

Are you talking about a chimney on top of the cabinet or are you talking about something else when you say vents

1. Doors are a personal decision. I would say 2. Have you thought about square doors?

2. Damper from CC to WB up to you from what I understand. I went more square.

3. The space between the FB and WB needs to be 1-2"s of either space or insulation. To buffer the radiant heat from the WB. (This is what was advised to me on my build).

Good luck!!

You can look at "Mack" by Frank in the RF section, it's a square cooker but there are a lot of pictures on framing the doors. CRS has a build in the RF section called New build underway, it's a tank that has square doors.

Alright thanks pennywise. Do yall think a 3 foot cabinet on top of the firebox is going to be too tall?

A lot of you questions you are asking are personal preference. With regards to the doors, square is the way to go. Much easier to build. One thing you will need to take into consideration is if you start off with a tank, you will need to calculate the additional volume the tank becomes when going with square doors. This information will be needed for the pitcalculator.

Alright ill figure out the extra volume. I figured alot of this was personal preference but since im building this for the church im trying to make it as user friendly as possible.

I don't think 3' is to tall. Depend how tall you are... Since it's not a trailer build I think you will be fine...

Incase you haven't already read about it... Your WB/VC space is extra space you do not count it as CC space. Just trying to save you a headache... incase

On a design like the mack should I buy gasket to go around the cc and vertical door openings or will it seal up good enough without it?
