Nuther fire pit for a buddy

Post by Frank_Cox » November 29th, 2015, 2:10 pm

My buddy had a couple end bells layin around from a 500 gallon tank I cut up years ago. After he seen the one I built a few weeks ago he decided he needed one too! So here ya go....
Image
The deal was I help him build one and I keep the other endbell...

Image
We marked it off to cut it more shallow

Image
Image
Always wear eye protection and a mask to protect from lead paint when grinding on these old tanks!

Image
Rolled a ring for trim and a good flat surface to mount the foot rest ring on. Welded it in place. I used 1-1/2 x 1/8 strap

Image

Image
Rolled another ring for the foot rest

Image
Image
Set the pit upside down in the ring to get the size of the standoff brackets then tacked them in place.

Image
Image
Mounted the legs on the bottom but forgot to take a pic. Then turned the pit over to check the standoffs for straight. I used a level and broke the tack welds loose to fix if they were wrong.

Image

Image
My buddy welded them in place after the fit was right.

Image
I made the fire grate and the cooking grate while he was doing some finish welding.

Image
And we made the pot hanger rack

Image
We made the shaft on the cooking rack longer than normal so he could make an adjustable mount..... He's a machinist....

Image
Image
Image
Made a fire poker

Image
Made this one with 2 mounting tubes so a disco could be used at the same time.
Image
Image
Gonna let him take it home and paint it...

Yep...what Pete said... How the heck do you roll a pice of metal like this band? Is it a machine or a technique?

Fantastic Frank... But I've come to expect no less from your efforts!

Thanks puff!!!
I use a pipe roller from Grizzly....
for the money it is quite the machine! it will roll round bar also. I use it mostly for flat stock. it will do 16ga full width but 1/8" material is a breeze as wide as 2"

They have some great tools as do so many industrial supply houses. I would love to have a few crazy tools like these in my garage and in fact, I do. But eventually, even a nutty hobbyist has to look at the practical side of things.
