My buddies 120 gal.RF hybrid

Post by SAFETYHARBORREDNECK » January 9th, 2016, 7:43 am

Thought you might want to see my friends(yes DC,I've got a friend.or 2) RF hybrid.
I'm pretty sure whoever built it didn't have access to smokerbuilder.com,nor a Feldon calculater,LOL.
I say that because,IMO,the FB to CC opening is undersized. It's a roughly 6" pipe that, instead of a RF plate, this pipe runs to the opposite end of the CC and utilizes(DC,that means "to use")tuning plates. The pipe has what looks like(i didn't measure)a series of 3"square holes in it every couple inches.
Looks like he did get the FB the right size though.Roughly 24" tall.
He(whomever built it) used 3 exhaust pipes. Can't figure out why 3.....And only the 2 end ones have the rain cap air inlet thingys.
Here's some pics.
20151004_110000.jpg
The smoker sits on 1 side of the trailer which puts the R/RR tire in close proximity(DC,means "near")to the FB.Soooo,we split a Keg in half to use as a heat shield!Redneck ingenuity!
IMG_20151225_103736.jpg
Here's a lok at the FB.Most people attach these horizontal.this was mounted vertical, which allows us to cook a pot of beans or p-nuts or gumbo or(are ya pickin up what I'm layin down,DC???) on top of it.
IMG_20151225_103745.jpg
We use a highly accurate, specially built apparatus to hold the cleanout door open at juuuust the right angle for air intake,LOL.
IMG_20151225_104144.jpg
The builder used some sort of chain links for the FB door hinges as well as for the CC door.
another view of the FB and it's doors.
20151004_110024.jpg
Here's a pic of the tube he used instead of a BP.It's a hybrid because it acts like a RF,but you can remove a few tuning plates to have a hot spot to cook your steak or burgers on.
20151011_114226.jpg
speaking of Redneck ingenuity,my friend noticed a hot spot near the FB,so he used what he had on hand to cover one of the holes in the pipe,LOL
20151011_114218.jpg
Here's a pic of the tuning plates. Not very good pics BUT I GOT PICS DC!
They are roughly 12" squares of stainless i'd guess 16 gauge, not sure, bent in the center to cover the pipe.they overlap each other an inch or 2.and yes, every couple years he has to get new ones built.Too much heat there....

But the only thing that counts is how does it cook?

If it's tourist season, how come I can't shoot 'em?

THERE'S that pot of Pintos!
Notice the bricks under the pot?
Once she gets boiling pretty good(he completely stuffs said firebox FULL of wood,so it gets plenty hot!I know,I know,ROOKIE) we set her on the"simmer stones".Lifts it off the heat a touch.

Couple racks of Spares and some Yard bird.

Talk about Redneck, that stirring spoon is a wooden oar cut in half and using the handle part as the stirrer.
Comes in handy when we cook a 10 gallon pot of Gumbo.

Here's another pic of the pipe( instead of a BP,this uses a,what looks like,8" pipe with 4" square holes)
uploadfromtaptalk1456175271638.jpg
uploadfromtaptalk1456174712082.jpg
Occasionally we use this thing. An old Bakers cart. It's pretty thin aluminum, but because of the stainless FB and a couple old Bean cans(zoom in,lol)to direct the heat,it doesn't affect it much.
We did 16 racks of Spares last summer in it.

Another friend just donated a smaller one.guess we'll build that soon.
