Thanks for all the encouragement.

I got the other door done today. All that is left is the middle flange. It'll be 1/8" higher than the other door so I can put a gasket on it also. You can see the 3/4" backing piece on the right door the middle flange will attach to.

Anyone use the Fireblack gasket? It's supposed to squish up to 60%.

I truly believe that if all the innovative people on this forum had been on the SS Minnow there would have never been a Gilligans Island. I'm impressed with your problem solving skills, great job!

I've always thought wrecking that boat was a great way to increase your odds of snagging a movie star like Ginger!

So what do you think? I see hinges in these steel targets. I just bought 5 for $25 total with free shipping. 6" diameter 3/8" thick 1/2" holes and made out of A36 and not the stronger AR500. I was actually debating some silhouette targets in the shape of hogs but too expensive when I came across these.

I think they could get me here fairly inexpensively.

I can see it, could possibly use a hole saw to cut centers out and give you a clean radius. Would take a little patience in doing so but would be worth it if you have limited options for cutting them. Nice score!

I don't want to sound like the bubble buster, "but" it takes 6 pieces to get 2 hinges. Other wise it will be sloppy.

Thanks Rodcrafter. Here is what I'm thinking. This isn't to scale but you get the idea. 6" outside and 3" inside. There are a couple of little pieces I thought I'd use to sandwich between the two ears. So this would get me to 1 target per hinge and leave me one for oops. $5 per hinge when complete. I don't have a plasma or torch so this gets me to my look with the tools I have available.

You are too kind Rodcrafter. If it all works out I'm a hero. If not then I have more targets for my pistol range. Either way I win :)

Great idea....I may just be crazy enough to try that myself. Love the design of the hinge.

Thanks guys. The targets should be here next Friday. If I get the gaskets here by then I might be able to get everything welded up and turn my attention to the trailer. My tractor bucket only has about a 1000# lift capacity so I need to get it mounted before adding more weight to it.

As I was looking on Ebay you can search A36 Plate along with your thickness and a ton of drops come up at prices even less than I paid with free shipping. Interestingly most of them are round with a small lead in cut which shouldnt be an issue in our case. So if you needed a smaller or larger diameter they will have them. When I build them I'll post a step by step for anyone that is interested.

So those steel targets came in. What I can say is they are roundish and the 1/2" holes vary from .5 to .75 I'd say if you were going to do this buy the drops that don't have the hanger holes and just drill all your holes. For what I'm using them for they will work fine.

Here is the first part
Image
Drill holes on drill press. Speed was about 250rpm. Use liberal amounts of cutting fluid. If you see smoke put more fluid down. I used a standard bi metal Milwaukee hole cutter. Each hole took about 10-15 minutes. I would go about 3/4 of the way through then flip it and go the rest of the way. The tool could have easily done another 5 or more holes.
Image
Here is where I am. Bonus is I have 5 - 3" circles to shoot at!
Image
I'll get my templates done tomorrow and start drilling and cutting these down.

OK got my templates made today and marked out my cuts and hole centers. Here you cane see the holes and cut lines.
Image
I then straight cut everything and bolted it together to see how it would look
Image
Image
They still need a good bit of grinding but you get the idea. I think 6" is probably a little small. I'd do 8" if I did it over but I'm not stressing over it. These doors and hinges have been a major time suck but I think the results will be worth it.

Don't forget to put some gasket material on the door before you weld on those hinges. If you plan on using gaskets that is. Nice work!
