Wheels For Patio Smoker

Post by Simpleaim » January 28th, 2016, 11:46 am

I'm planning on using 8" wheels for one side of my smoker and casters on the other. I've been looking at tires and wheels but what do I do for the axle? This smoker is going to be pretty heavy. 24" x 60" x .25" CC with cabinet doors, warming box and FB.

I'd hate to go to the expense of a trailer axle and I don't know if there is one short enough. I only want this smoker for my backyard patio.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Ken

I am in similar boat doing a similar build and looking for tires.

Mine will need to roll on gravel at times so I need a wheel that will no dig into the ground. Currently, I'm looking at a full set of 10 inch by 4.6 inch go-kart tires. My hope is to put a simple steering on the front to turn a few degrees. The "front" tires on a go kart slip on a solid rod/spindle so are pretty easy to mount.

I'll be watching to see what other ideas pop up.

I would say go to this web site and look at some stuff Paul and Tyler make so you can see what they use. They build a lot of what you are working on.

Thanks Rodcrafter. I did go to their site and also watched their YouTube videos. That's how I got the idea of the 8" tires but you can't see how they did their axles or what they are.

Thanks,

Ken

Take a look at this thread you can see the setup pretty good here.

It is still Paul and Tyler, but it is a thread they did here on this site. You can search other stuff they did on here as well. Now as for the axle, you have to understand the weight of a go cart is not at all close to the weight of your cooker. Here is a picture of my patio rig it has an 1" solid round bar axle with wheels and tire that would handle 2000 lbs.

Your rig will be plenty heavy. You might want to try to get some wheels from an implement graveyard. I use some combine head wheels for my syrup cooker and they hold the weight just fine (and it's way heavier than a smoker). They're basically a bushing hub and all you would need is a 1" shaft.

You can buy weld on spindles with hubs and attach them to your smoker or you can use round bar like the guys said.

heres my build. rims are rototiller tires which have a heavier rim then some of the 8'' rim/tires that you see used on hand carts. ive seen those wheels bend at the hub if its a heavier smoker. ill try to post some pics of it done.

I have a top go kart shop in town and my neighbor is a ranked driver with 15 years experience...they both indicated to me that the tires and rims would be fine with that weight. I am, for the record, estimating 8-900 lbs when finished for my particular build. Those karts aren't heavy but at speed and corners are dealing with other stresses besides weight. The air pressure on them is rated up to 65 psi.

Concerns with axles are warranted but axles are available for the karts of hardened alloys that should take the weight if a solid steel rod won't.

Best part is new rims and tires will always be available if I ever ruin one....or just want to add rain groves, off road tires or slicks!

Thanks to all!

One thing that comes to mind is how do I attached a solid rod to the wheel if I go that route? I've changed the axles in my truck but the axle has a hub attached. This is assuming I buy a wheel with a bearing integrated.

Thank you,

Ken

Generally there will be a hub nut & a locking device, either a nut with a piece you bend over with a hammer or a castellated nut with a split pin if the axle has a hole for it.

Get a front tire/wheel. They are smaller and don't have a drive assembly like the rears. They have a (replaceable) bearing in the center and just slip on a spindle or solid rod. The spindle uses a standard nylon locking nut and you can either thread the solid rod or cross-drill a hole and slide on a washer and cotter pin.

You could also take a thin cutting wheel and cut a slot around the end of the axle and use an "e" clip.
