I personally would have a hard time deviating from the Smokerbuilders plans without talking w/ Frank. But like RC said yes you can change the diameter it will just be taller. Frank might have had a reason for going 8" on this pit... I dunno

I'm not sure what the difference in length of 6''vs 8'' would be but you need to keep in mind the overall height of your cooker. I'm not sure what your plans are as far as storage and what not but I like be able to get mine in and out of the garage door. If it does end up being too tall you can always make your stack removable, just something to keep in mind.
Yes it is big for a backyard smoker but as I told my wife it s smaller than the lang 84 deluxe with chargriller I had before this build. I have most of the skills needed to build this except for the welding I am an above average beginner. That being said I took apart a bolted together boat trailer for a 12 foot v bottom boat this weekend. it is galvanized so welding was a challenge. It was 14' by 61" it is now 96" by 46" and will only be used to move it from my yard to another trailer if that. I will post pics this weekend after I have time to watch the video instructions. I need advice on removing rust from the used pipe I am using for the cc and fb. I got the pipe cheap for this area and there is some rust.
I would recommend you wear a good dust mask if you're not going to the sand blast guy. I've used wire wheel cones and flap discs. Both of these will put lots of dust in your nose.

I have learned that having it media blasted is worth the price. It saves you time, it keeps the mess out of your workspace (and from getting tracked into the house) and saves all the flap disks.
Scheduling it at my local shop does take some effort but the price is minimial.
Blasting is nice but if you don't have a place to keep it indoors then it can get covered in surface rust pretty quick. I use a wire wheel to knock of all of the loose stuff and a flap wheel to clean the area that I'm welding on, I have it blasted once it's finished and ready to paint. Blasting is a little pricey in my area and I usually have to wait a few days to a week to get it back.
Some photos of my build. I cut up and welded back together a trailer and got the cc on it. The trailer is just to make it easier to move around in my back yard.
the trailer is now 6' shorter and 18" narrower
with a flagstone patio it will be easier to move on this
I am using 26in pipe for my fire box and think I want to put a door on it like a chargriller so I can use it as a grill for a small hot cook. I would also build it so I can mount a flat piece of steel to it to use as a place for heating sauce or anything in a pot. Has anyone done this? Hopefully I can get to cutting the door and end caps tomorrow work is really screwing up my weekends.
I did that on my bigger rig, except the flat plate part. I used a separate piece of steel I would just set it on the top of using it for the hot plate. This kept me from making the door heavy all the time when I only needed the hot plate once in a while.
