Few smoker questions.

Post by Money520 » December 2nd, 2015, 5:35 pm

I've done a lot of reading but still have a few questions, I've done the pit calculator and was wondering on my firebox do I allow a few extra inches on the bottom of the box for the ashtray or just cut it out using the dimensions from the calculator? Also I'm building a reverse flow smoker do u butt the baffle up to the firebox or do I need to put it above it? Also do I need to put a dampener between the smoker and firebox? Thanks ahead of time.

No, yes, no.

J/K

No need to add extra volume to the FB for an ash pan. The BP (baffle plate) is the same height as the top of the FB. Some folks actually make it one continuous piece. Nothing between the FB and CC. You control the flow of heat and smoke with the FB intakes and the stack.

Also I'm kind of second guessing my self I was told to cut the door a quarter of what the diameter of the tank is. It jus looks a little small to me

I cut my doors 1'' above 12 O clock and 1'' below 3 O clock, I got that from RC. If you cut them like this and add your flange it helps with water run off and it allows you to have your bottom grate at dead center.

Ok next question my calculator suggested a 12.13 inches half moon for the firebox.. What's the easiest way to achieve this thought about cutting out a 24 inch circle out of cardboard and cutting that in half? With that be to big?

1/4 is perfect for the firebox and baffle plate.

Hello so I'm moving along slowly do to Christmas an my sons birthday coming up on the 31st so this project has become a bit of s budget build.. My original plan was to do the fb an the BP in 1/4 but it's looking like I only have enough to do the BP in 1/4. I have a bunch of 3/16 would that be ok for the fb if I double all 4 sides? I also plan on putting fire bricks in the bottom.. Thanks

Fire bricks would work fine everywhere except the bottom. The bottom is the coolest side of the firebox. The side against the CC is the strongest because it is smallest, but the top is the most effected by the heat. I'm sure if you did a great deal of plug welds to join the 2 layers of plate it would be fine.

I only used 1/4 for my baffle plate and the vertical side that the throat is cut from...everything else was 3/16 and it seems ok so far.

Don't forget that a complete lining of brick will decrease the overall interior by quite a bit and would require a re-size of the firebox.

That is true, since it's under almost finished I don't think I'll be able to do the fire bricks.. Thanks for the tip

Hey guys thanks for the help so far.. I've been cruising along as fast as time an money will allow.. I'm putting the BP in tonight and was just curious of how high it should be.. I have it overlapping the fb but to me it looks high? I know it's not the best picture but does this look like a decent ratio?Image

Also how high up from the baffle plate should my racks be? Thanks

If it's a 24" diameter tank, the 18.25" BP should be 4.25" up from the bottom to yield a 52 sq. in. throat area.

You could add a grease dam at the bottom to compensate. Post all the inside dimensions of the tank and the height of the BP and I can get it for you.

The bottom rack should be between 2''-5'' from the BP, just make sure the throat is the recommended size and you'll be fine.

The BP was getting hung up on the inside seams of the tank.. Done some grinding and got it dropped down.
