Non LP disco

Post by Smokydokey » October 3rd, 2015, 9:48 pm

I'm making a non LP disco, really wanted to be able to use wood, but not on a campfire. I got 2- 22" discs and I am putting leg's on one of them and that's going to be the fire pan with the other disc sitting above it for cooking. As usual, I'll draw/sketch a little, then cut & weld a little, then stare at it A LOT. Well in one of my staring sessions, beverage in hand, I started thinking that charcoal might be a lot hotter, easier & just better than wood. This is where I'm at.(pic) but I've NEVER used, held, seen in person or eaten out of a discada! It is shown with only the lower disc that is welded to the base and it will be what the fire is in.
Right now I'm thinking I'll take a 4" wide strip of 1/8 and roll it into a 18" or so circle to place (not weld) in the lower disc to have a charcoal fire in it and a good "seat" for the cooking disc to sit. I made that center 4" pipe an air intake with a damper, if I don't need it it will also serve as an ash dump. (2nd pic) I'm wondering if I should have a hotter center/cooler outside temps on the disc or do you find it best to have as constant temp across the whole surface. This will help me size the dia. that I make this charcoal "ring". Like I said, no exp. what so ever. Any comments welcomed.

Just think of a huge wok...that's what it really is

If you can't fix it by sheer force or cursing......then it can't be fixed.....

Well it's a far way from spring here, but I'm thinkin it!
I dug this hunk of chit out of the corner and went back at it. I need an opinion. I'm thinking that I'll be using charcoal, the 2 discs are spaced apart with an old spoke type truck wheel spacer, near 4" wide. It fit's so nicely between and seals pretty tight. I have a 4" pipe that go's into the center of the bottom (fire area) with a damper on it and should double as a clean out.
I'm thinking that this type of cooking is done hot, and if I can make enough heat, I might even be able to shallow deep fry chicken & tater's. My question is do you think the charcoal will burn with little to no "exhaust"? By keeping things tight, I thought that I might be able to really make this thing hot enough for not so deep fried chicken.
We don't have a wok & I don't care for "chineese" type food much, but for fixin up some fajita's or any other skillet type stuff down at the camp (no elec.) I can't wait to try it. Like I said, I really don't want to fool with a tank & burner down there at the camp. When we're there, we are not in a hurry, but I think that with a burner set on the lower disc, and a stand for the cooking disc, it could be converted if I can't make enough heat.
If you think the charcoal needs to exhaust to burn, I could weld little 1/4" rods vertically around the "ring" and space it up 1/2-3/4".

I can't help but think that you'll need some exhaust to create a draft to get your charcoal to burn.

I agree, "wishfull thinking" on my part. I'm going to plug the axle hole and modify the ring and burn it off today.
It just seems like brickette's just burn away with little smoke or fire action.

It looks like a easy fix would be just drill some 1/2" holes around the ring. I'm going to be making an disco for my cowboy cooker after using Frank's at the gathering(s)..

I did a little math and a 1/4" gap around the circumference of the ring is a few sq/in bigger than the 4" air inlet. I put 8 little spacers around the top of the ring and with the damper wide open, the cooking disc hit 750's with the infrared therm during the burn off. I did not have any brickette's around and used wood chunks, I'm happy that this might be an option. All I need to do is get the chineese paint off the cook disc and I'm ready to go!

Agri supply, 22" for about $20ea. there's not a lot of (ground tillage) ag left around here, and these boy's would have them discs worn down to the hubs before they got replaced =))
