I know what you mean. My wife says I'll never be done with this thing. She and a friend was calling my trailer rig the other woman. So be careful what you say about your smoker in mixed company. You know people who aren't smoker builders.

Here is the firebox setup. Going to be putting pull down toggles on the lids to help seal them shut. Two each. May end up going with two clean out doors per box since I feel more comfortable with having a support brick in the middle. The grating is pretty stout but does bow without the middle brick. Kind of simple setup but I think it will work. I do have a question though. I've been kicking around the idea of welding a piece of 2" angle across the back as kind of a stiffening rod to prevent the back wall from warping from the heat. It's 10 gauge steel so I'm not sure if it'll need it or not. Any thoughts?

Too funny!

As for the thickness of the FB, that is way thin, I don't know how I missed it. Are you going to line it with something? I couldn't recommend thinner than 1/4" for a FB and mine are thicker than that. I do make things heavier than most but that is just me I guess.

If the 10gauge will warp I guess I will be lining it. Not sure with what but I really don't want it getting all jacked up. My other smokers box was 1/8th but it was rolled so that probably why I never had any issue. Never used a square or rectangle box before.

Do you think 1/4" ceramic paper rated at 2300 would work to protect the metal from warping?

I don't have any experience with that, but it is better than nothing.

First Smoker Build, Hybrid Rotisserie and Shelf Smoker

Post by forty_creek » February 16th, 2016, 9:35 pm

I used 3/8's. During burnout and seasoning I had some movements.
I also used 1" ceramic insulation FB and WB/VC. I also "X" braced the doors.
My first cook I had lil movement with doors on my double door section. I've since welded 1/2" x 2" flat bar under the top of the CC with a leg down the end (at the BP gap) with gussets.

Got the stacks tacked together and on the smoker. Once they're all welded I could technically fire at least one side up. I may do that to see what the firebox is going to do. My theory is that with the fireboxes size and the large opening going into the cook chambers I won't ever require a large fire. Smaller fire, less rapid uneven heat disbursement, less chance for warping. But never having cooked on a smoker this big nor of this configuration I have no real idea what will happen or what I'm talking about, lol. I just wanted a half rotisserie, half shelf smoker and didn't want to pay someone else to build it. Oh and huge, had to be huge. So as not to waste any material and in hopes of helping control the fire a bit better I also went ahead and made a couple less than eye catching charcoal baskets out of my leftover expanded metal. More busy work while waiting for materials than anything.

I know how anxious I am to see this thing fire up, I can only imagine how excited you are to see it fire up.

So to solve the whole lids being huge and a pain to open all the way and then shut, I decided to go with two short rods that insert into tubes on the lids and made a resting plate for them to sit in. Not the best looking thing in the world but it works. Also got the baffles put in for good so now I can figure out where I want the tuning plate rails to go.

Got busy with my day job so I haven't had much time to work on the smoker. Got the stack caps on and the tuning plate in. I was going to go with individual plates for tuning but I figured I'd give the one plate increasing hole diameter style a try. Of course I had to cut it in half to get it in the smoker and then weld it back together haha.

Haha. One actually did. I broke one on the first try and grabbed its replacement out of a set of sockets.
