Thanks guys. It's cool to hear such positive feedback from a group that's been doing this for a while now. I made more progress today. So much coming together all at once! I ran into a hiccup today with the latches. They were obviously not meant for a 2" thick door. I made my own hooks for the latches out of some ¼" flat stock. I also made a set of shields for the thermometers from a piece of stainless pipe I had laying around. I backed it with regular steel so that part will get paint, but the shields, I will buff them to a polished finish.
Looks like your doing quite well, they are much like a puzzle aren't they? one piece at a time except once in a while you come across a piece from a different puzzle. If you can take a pellet burner and make a smoker out of it I knew a couple of non- cooperating latches would'nt get in your way. Good job!

Grandma always said "if ya can't be handsome ya better at least be handy"
I like the way it blued too. Came off the plasma table like that. Do I paint it or clear coat? I was thinking a black Frankenstein head sillouette with raw metal on the rest and high-temp clear coat over the whole thing.
As for the christening, I believe it's gonna be ribs and wings. Still have a bit of work before the first cook though. Adding a silicone gasket that another student in the plastics/polymers program developed (soon I hope). There is a 1/8 to 3/16 gap around both doors right now so it hemorrhages heat and smoke.I will Screw in angle for the shelves once it cools down, But I've got it holding 450 right now trying to burn off any grease and oils left over from the shop. I put 5 lb of pellets in it about 5 hours ago and it still looks like it's got about 3 lb left. It even rolls a bit of smoke when it hits 450. still smoking in the background. I'm gonna let it burn through the 5 lb and burn out.
I started at 3 pm and the 5lb ran out at 2 am. I had a bonfire last night with friends over and it became a game to see who could guess the temperature at random intervals during the night (price is right rules of course) so I was able to record the temperatures and the time on paper. The controller was set at high/450 degrees and the temp read anywhere from 446 to 455 throughout the night. With no door gaskets I should add. I am very happy with how it performed. Excited to get cooking soon...
No... I would hope that it runs a bit better lol. I should mention that the hopper fed the pellets down the slanted faces perfect. Very relieved that there are no issues there. I'll get a measurement on what angles they actually came out to later this weekend.
Oh. I almost forgot to mention how I ended up getting it home I bribed a few guys from the shop to help me push it up the hill back to my house. Only about a ½ mile, but 600 lbs sure does get heavy after a ½ mile. But beer is quite a strong driving force among men.
